What is the purpose of the removable the diffuser over the internal strobe? Will it give it a little more distance or wash things out? I have not tried any pictures with out it. But I will next week.

The diffuser spreads light out and directs it down past the lens bezel. Remember the strobe is inside the camera, which is inside the housing, nearly 2 inches (5cm) back from the front of the bezel.
