I think the part where OP said he didn't understand that if they lost sight of each other they just "continue" is being missed. This really seems buddy related. As in, he needs a whole lot of retraining where he's paying attention. Predive planning should go similar to discussing that you will search for x time you're both comfortable with for buddy if separated, if unfound, surface. It's not "why, I don't get that. Lets dive anyways". How did you get separated anyways (or did you)?
I dove with him before this time. When we lost sight of each other, he just swam to shore.
This dive, I made sure to tell him "if we loose sight of each other, surface, and wait for me. Do not swim to shore." On the dive, I led. On the return to shore, he assumed he was leading, yet immediately went some way without me knowing until I looked back and he was gone. I surfaced, looked, he did not surface. I went back down, he was not there. I surfaced again and he was not there. I headed back to shore, prepared to call emergency services.
We ended up meeting each other almost at shore.
I will not be diving with him again.
I Just wanted to find out if it was incompetence or instruction that was the cause.
