We are comming to Kauai April 1. We thought we could see the whales and still have good weather, looks like this must be the rainy season? water rough, diving not as good, water temp average 75, that sounds even too cold for swimming?? Someone please give us some good News.

The good news is this is very unusual and it will probably be over when you get here. I have been here only four years but I have not seen this in prior seasons. Also, the full moon incoming tide can easily clear our viz pretty quickly. We had a 100+ viz day right in the middle of this mess the other day, cause the tide was right. Good news,You will probably see whales.

You still won't have roads or water supply for most of the island. It is winter in Hawaii too you know? Any way you can change you island? Big Isle or Maui maybe? Mo betta time since Kauai is washed out, IMHO.
BTW, if you haven't beet to the islands before, wet suits are the norm even in summer. Winter demands it and some even wear dry suits. A 5 mm should suffice though.

I was there last year around this time and although we didn't go to dive we had wonderful weather the whole time we were there...and here, today - it was pretty hot, I even think I got a tan ....the water temps for you, who comes from a colder place, will be comfortable...enjoy Kauai!!

Aloha,

"No rain - No rainbows".... You didnt pick the wrong month at all. None of us had any way of expecting what has happened. This is just Mother Nature being... well, Mother Nature. Last March-April we had amazing conditions and crazy Humpback Whale encounters! I can say that in 7 years here I havent seen anything quite like this. I dive for a local dive shop and it is shocking to all of us. However... today we had afternoon sun! And no rain yet tonight. I watched about a dozen Humpback Whales playing in the shallow waters off Poipu beach (Sheraton Resort - South side) with a friend for about 45 minutes just this evening. We have our fingers crossed for all visitors on their way to Kauai. Ok, that doesn't help much huh? You're getting mixed opinions which makes it tough I know. But it doesnt take long to clear up here and return to "Hawaiian diving conditions." That is the truth. No soul on this island can say what is ahead. That's a tough reality that we are dealing with. You are still about 2 weeks out so things can really change. Dont hesitate to call your dive shop - or email them (the one you will dive with here). We'll guide you the very best that we can. Kauai is a magical place that you will love - and we want the diving to be a HUGE part of that. I am here on island now - so please ignore statements of "no roads" or issues with water supply. People are trying to be kind no doubt - but just aren't totally informed. There are isolated road closures here at the moment but they are not expected to be an issue for tourists come April certainly. Water just isnt an issue either. The primary boat/scuba tours are Fathom Five, SeaSports, and Bubbles Below. While I work for Fathom Five - I encourage you to call any of the dive family here on island and we will help make your dive vacation wonderful - to the best of our abilities of course. If you don't get the answers you need of enough of the info you desire... just repost and I will personally help in any possible way I can.

Is not a part of the only highway and a water main now missing or are the pictures Im seeing photoshoped? http://starbulletin.com/
First hand info is the best but from where Im sitting it looks kinda messy.
I am always amused by people who come to the islands for the first time and don't know what to expect or are expecting something way different. Like I said, it is winter in Hawaii too.
Either way, Im sure you will have a good time. The weather has to change at some point. http://www.crh.noaa.gov/ifps/MapClick.php?site=hfo&map.x=54&map.y=46

Hope it dries up soon, the whole state that is. Good luck with the vacation!

Choose Aloha!....Funny, sometimes after a "disaster" things can even be better in some ways. like Phuket (not to compare the two), the Thai were so appreciative of the business that people said they got the royal treatment....and no crowds. nature does amazing things after big storms, you may get rainbows galore in many ways. I feel that this weather will be gone by then. We are getting another system in later this week though.
The aquaman who answered your post?....You can tell that a guy like that would show you an exceptional experience just by his outlook! More and more I realize how much more this matters than anything else.....and Hawaii, well, we have lots of "those people"!

thank you all so much for your response, I will focus on the positives and prepare for the negatives. We are still looking forward to going, and Aquaman we will look you up at fathem five to book some of our dives, are you a dive master there? We have all our own equipment, but not the 5mm suits, do they rent those out?
