It is an o=ring for crying outloud. OP said it looked like it was 5 years old. You are condemning this shop owner without seeing the actual o-ring. It is hearsay.
Forget about inspecting it. An o-ring is a disposable piece rubber which perhaps was damaged by the OP (or buddy), perhaps somebody grabbed a bad one off the bench, or it was 5 years old. She should have had a spare.
