if these were rental tanks, shouldn't they have been inspected by the divers renting before leaving the dive shop?

:shakehead Making the divers responsible for checking rental gear before they leave with it? Where would they learn such a thing? I'll bet you're one of those zealots that thinks you should be able to choose your own profile to dive too.. For shame.:D

Wonder if they checked the pressure before they left when they rented.

Thanks everyone for your input! I am new to the board, as you can see by my whopping 3 posts. I had no idea so many people were on here and cared so much about what they read! Most of you are very down to earth, and some....kind of on your own planet.
I have all my own gear and always have, thats why I DONT rent. One buddy was 13 years old, the other was 55 and traveled from out of state, so didnt have his own stuff. The tank that was messed up was considered an extra tank, so when it leaked badly, we just threw it back in the truck and used the other one. We only had so long to dive, so we didnt spend a lot of time messing with it.
I have determined that I am the worst diver ever and dont deserve my C card anymore because I missed a bad o-ring, but the other 75% of who think the shop is in the bad make me feel like I should maybe give diving one more try. I knew I was wrong too, but if I was going to have an accident, the shop should have given me gear in working condition so I could kill myself doing other stupid things. If I was the worst diver on the planet and doomed to die tomorrow, I still did not deserve to be treated like that by the shop. After showing the shop owner this thread, she simply replied that " It looks like you should learn something from them". I did, and thank you very much. It is also safe to say that I will not B Divn' with them any more. This wasnt about the oring, but about customer service.
Thanks again, I am very happy to be a part of scubaboard.com.

Hi Texaswinds! Welcome to

!!!!!

I know I'm on my own planet, but hey...it's fun here and the water's great! :D

While I would think that the shop owner would have been wise to refund your money, I think you are a little too upset about the problem.

Is a busted o-ring and 8 bucks worth being so upset about? I would think it would take a little more to make me jump the shark with these people if I thought anything of them.

Dude, don't buy bad karma.

Hey, Texaswinds !

I've personally done things I wish I hadn't, including something as serious as losing the bouy on a drift in FL:shakehead (all ended up fine, Thank God). I learned a lesson about hooking that bouy on as soon as I get it and you and I have both learned some tips about how to keep spare o-rings. :)

We're not perfect but businesses still need customers and I don't think the shop was gonna go broke over 1 rental charge.

We're in FW also so I am glad you posted back to give us the company; it's not the first tank/service related issue I've heard about WBD, so you've confirmed we won't be using them either. It also confirms another reason we run over to ScubaToys on Saturdays.:luxhello:

On to dive another day...

A couple of things stand out about your post, Texaswinds.

1. Please tell me your guests were certified and this wasn't an informal Discover Scuba class.

2. If the 3rd tank was intended as a spare and you never intended to use the air, why did you ask for a refund? The tank was available as a spare (by swapping an o-ring with another tank so you got that "value" from it.

3. So you own your own tanks, do you ever check and replace the o-rings in them? If so, you would know to check o-rings in any tank. If not, you're just lucky this situation hasn't occurred with your own tanks yet.

4. After being treated so poorly by this shop, why are still even talking to them? Is there any kind of history or personal conflict here?

ReefHound-
All divers were definately certified, although I missed an oring, I am not negligent to the point I would risk anyone's life by being that stupid. We did our "normal" gear checks before we got into the water. The deepest part of this dive was 11 feet, if something happend to the o-ring during the dive, we could have stood up. I know every dive should be treated as life threatening, but I MISSED the o ring.
My tank is in fine condition, it is closet kept in the house with a constant temp year around, inspected once a year by the shop, is never without the dust cap, and always has a good ring on it. Even though it was an extra, I still paid $10 for it, it wasnt kept up and I wasnt able to use it due to that. Bla, Bla Bla. The point is, I ate the ten dollars, the shop owner is just going to pass this bad tank along to next next poor diver and possibly cost him a dive and thats that.
For question 4, yes, I actually just started using this shop very recently. I was working a deal with her to rent gear from her for my discover scuba courses and give her exclusive refferals from all of my students that were interested. We had just made a deal about four days before this happened! I am afraid to send anyone that trusts my opinion to a shop that doesnt service their gear or care about customer service.

I should have checked the o ring <bad Texaswinds, don't ever do that again> The shop owner could have at least appologized for their bad part or something. This is just a big deal to me, because every time I have ever walked into ScubaToys, I have been treated like I was their number one customer. Its a huge shop and they could spit on me when I walked in and not see the difference in their business, but they dont, and thats ultimately what counts- the diver.

Aside from your fault or not, it's just bizaare that a shop would seemingly try so hard to alienate any customer, much less a potentially high-volume customer, over a silly tank rental. That's why I wondered if there was a history or personal conflict. It's almost as if they are deliberately poking you.

I actually deleted my last post because I thought Texaswinds was beat up enough. But now we find she could have in fact used the tank as it was a spare. Bad o-ring, crap. It seems she was shaking down the dive shop. The shop owner stood up, so now she takes it to a public forum to punish the shop. (Vfox "outed" the shop in her post.)
Texaswinds says even though it was extra, she still paid $10.00 for it. Well she could have used an o-ring from another tank then.
I'm disgusted.
