They are actually checking to see if you are poaching. When they approach me they ask if Ive caught anything good. I thought they did this just to show how freindly they are and that they are concerned that I havent caught anything and they feel bad for me. Jeesh that changes my point of view about them. As to think they even helped us with our gear by using their flashlights to light the area for us.

Speaking of getting searched at night, I had the strangest encounter ever with the EP here in RI on Saturday.

The three of us were sitting around talking after the dive and the EP truck pulls up.

Two officers get out of the truck. I am still in my drysuit and dripping wet. So here I am expecting the lobster questions....

Instead one of them shines his light on a pile of beer bottles someone had left by our cars and says, "We just wanted to inform you there is no drinking allowed in the park."

So I told him the truth, "We aren't drinking. Those were already here when we arrived."

He just answered, "Okay, thanks have a nice night," and then they both left.

They didn't look in our vehicles, didn't look at our piles of gear, and never once asked about lobsters. If it weren't for their uniforms I would have figured them for town police or state troopers.

Grabbing bugs at night is big time illegal and it really pisses off the commercial lobsterman! It got really bad in RI about 15(?) years ago. When Lobsterman spotted divers they would actually toss explosives in the water

That is why I always have a couple of those fake rubber lobstas with me, just in case the pros get an attitude. I start taking out the real lobstas and putting in a fake rubber one, with a note that says.

Surprise, surprise.

But I always leave the real lobstas in the traps, if there are any in there. Then I leave a message from the red neck living in the red house with barn near Lane Cove, " Come and get me".
