Destination Quarrys

I've been to a few quarry's and while they were dive opportunities I'd be hard pressed to call them dive destinations. I know many of you folks inland dive what you can dive and that's very cool.

Are there any that are really nice dives that would be worth the trip? Set aside the chance to meet fellow board members and all that camaraderie stuff I'm asking about the diving. Great visibility odd critters novel attractions, you known what I mean.

Bonne Terre mine. A very big underwater Quarry.

I have toured it but, haven't dove yet.

I've been to Gilboa, Haigh, Mermet, and Loch Low Minn. I think they are all very accomodating and unique. Gilboa and Mermet both have large airplanes. Mermet and Haigh have lots of fishes, including paddlefish. I only did one dive in Loch Low Minn, so I can't say as much about it, although it seemed nice and familiar and Stacy was very accomodating to our small group. I think LLM now has paddlefish as well.

Bluestone quarry, just south of Greensboro, NC. That was the last dive I did before we moved out west.

In Pa, I have dove Dutch Springs, Bainbridge and Willow Springs. I would say that Dutch is set up the best and has the most. They just sunk a Hell Diver plane(replica of the WW2 Navy bomber) Kevin the Manager tells me that it really was on the Intrepid though.

I have to agree with Do It Easy. I've been to Mermet. There's lots to see (cars, trucks, bus, boats, train cars, jet plane & such) as for critters there are paddle fish & some very large catfish, including some albinos. It also offers some deep (up to 120'), albeit cold diving. It's one of the better quarries in this area.

In Georgia, we dive Lake Lanier. We have seen Budweiser fish, Coors fish, Miller fish, and occasionally even the elusive engine block fish.

Bainbridge Scuba Center http://www.divebsc.com/ is an every wednesday night dive destination for me in the summer months!

Don't forget the Tonka trucks at Mermet on the platforms. Gilboa has paddlefish too, just aren't spotted too often.

Well... they' ain't the keys... but then, the key's ain't the quarrys either.

This summer my wife and I are planning on doing our first annual "Midwest Quarry Crawl"... we've got about 7 quarrys on our list... the idea is to go from quarry to quarry... kinda' like the ol' 'Surfin' Safari' thing... camp whenever possible... dive as much as possible... gypsey on...

Every site has *something* to recommend it... even those with 2 inch viz... heck, if all ya' did was dive in "see eternity viz"... where the heck is the fun of that???

Sometimes it ain't the destination... sometimes it's the journey.
