I consulted with my dentist and we determined that it would be best to have the tooth removed. How long after the extraction can I dive in the pool? I'm currently teaching a 6 week class.

Dude what did your dentist say ?

That may be your best source of information. As my dentist skills are only on the breaking of the teeth part.

....ARE YOU TRYIN' TO KILL THIS DIVER!? :)

OK...let's see...same thread, different question.

A simple extraction, no complications, no sutures, around 1-2 weeks.

Complex extraction, sutures, dry socket, infection, sinus involvement...around 6 weeks or longer if complications persist.

Most extractions are of the simple type. Some teeth that need apicoectomy however, already have a failing root canal and as a result, the tooth is brittle and may have to be sectioned to be removed. There may also be a granuloma or cyst that must be curretted out of the socket as a result of the recurrent infection...er...do you suppose this is more information than you ever wanted to know?

I'm beginning to tell more and more of my patients who have failing root canals that extraction, followed by a single tooth implant is easier than an apicoectomy, it most likely has a better long term prognosis and, while more expensive initially, will probably cost less than a root canal, post, cap, apicoectomy, extraction and a fixed bridge to replace the lost tooth. This treatment plan is not appropriate for all tooth losses and all patients. Let you own dentist discuss the pros and cons with you.

Hey, Wolf EEl, you think it was the part about two flaps and two holes through the bone that did it?

OK OK. I'm just having fun with this as he was just at his dentist what did he have to say after "well I'm going to have to pull a tooth". Did he not ask ?????

Na it so far has not been me. So far. But to me it is a better idea to ask you own dentist when sitting in the chair. Thats all. I will say it again I am sorry just having some fun !Boy are you ever lucky you do not dive with me then I would really be riding your butt. Like I said I am only having fun. Could his dentist not tell him what may happen at a swimming pool ?
Again you are the Doc. :doctor:

Here is my status:

I had the tooth extracted on Friday. The doctor said that a second root canal wouldn't have done any good. He cleared me for teaching in the pool, but advised against diving in anything deeper for about 3 weeks. Just to give it time to heal.

He also said that I'm not a good candidate for an implant since there was a lot of tissue between my tooth and the bone. So it looks like I'll be getting a bridge.
