Would it be okay to separate some of these issues into a thread called "cost of diving", which would deal both with the costs of getting into, and of continuing to dive? I've got some opinions on this, based on getting into diving three separate times in my life, having to give it up twice, and recently (and still) having to buy equipment, training and dive charters not just for myself, but also for my wife and daughter.
