About the DiveSite: the following is from the Off The Wall Charters

LakeJocassee Sites:
Posted Depths are with the lake at full pond.
Quarry--The quarry is a 30 acre cove on the eastern shore of LakeJocassee, best known as "The Wall." It has a wide variety of depths and an average visibility of 20+ feet. In the early days of the season, the visibility extends to around 40 feet. The quarry was created when granite was blasted from the side of the mountain to construct an earthen dam leaving a sheer wall that rises almost 100 feet out of the water. Directly below this sheer wall, the blasting created an underwater playground, where additional underwater attractions have been added over the years. The wall descends to approximately 30 feet where it flattens out to form a ledge that is 30 yards wide. It then drops vertically to a depth of 65 feet, the depth of the majority of the cove. This 65-foot ledge then drops vertically to a depth of 175 feet and continues at a steep angle downward to approximately 365 feet. The quarry is only accessible by boat and offers a wide variety of diving.
Junk-- Located at the wall, the Junk is a 40 ft. Chinese sailboat. It is resting in 65 feet of water at the top of the deep wall. It is almost fully intact and is easily penetrable. Fish life is usually very plentiful around the wreck.
Basketball Goal-- This site is located at the quarry in 40 feet of water near the 65 foot wall. What makes this site so exciting is that we play one-on-one basketball. How? A bowling ball makes a great basketball underwater.
Motorcycle--Also at the quarry, the motorcycle is in 30 feet of water and is in the same area as the Basketball Goal. Jump right on, purge your regulator, and feel the wind in your face!
Training Platform--In the same area as the Basketball Goal and Motorcycle, the training platform sits in 25 feet of water and is in the same area as the Basketball Goal and the Motorcycle. This area is perfect for classes and checkout dives. The platform allows students to easily demonstrate their skills.
Dam--Sorry the Dam is now closed to boats as of 1-20-2003
Graveyard-- As seen in the movie Deliverance. This site is located on the open body of the lake and is in 138 feet of water. It was the old Mount CarmelChurch graveyard. The church was moved out of the valley before the lake was filled. Most of the graves were exhumed and relocated to another site. There are several markers that were left behind, as well as some of the curbs that once surrounded the plots. This is considered to be a technical dive beyond normal sport diving ranges. It has very good visibility, but it can be a little chilly.
Jellyfish Hill --This is the top of a mountain that rises to 25 foot below the surface out in the middle of the lake. So named, for the sighting September 2002 of a Freshwater Jellyfish on top of the hill. The North side of the hill slopes steeply into a tree line at 80 foot and on to 150 +. The other three sides are more gently sloping and more open with the exception of 60 or more Christmas trees scattered on the South side of the hill and there is a single motor boat sunk at this site on the eastern slope.
Attakulla Lodge -- This building stands in 300 foot on the bank of what was the WhiteWaterRiver. The building is 2 1/2 stories tall and is intact. The Attakulla Lodge served as a hotel from 1904 into the 1950's. The lodge is the centerpiece of the book Jocassee Remembered by Debbie Fletcher. The book recounts her memories as a little girl visiting here Grandfather who owned the lodge. There is a permanent down line to moor and descend to the lodge. We located the lodge in July 2004 and have done 3 perimeter dives to this date. There will be interior explorations as the dive site is surveyed and evaluated.
SteelBridge & Jocassee Camp For Girls -- The Bridge spans the WhitewaterRiver one mile down stream of the Attakulla Lodge and sits in front of the gates to the Jocassee Camp For girls. The bridge lies in 320 foot of water. It's span was over 75 foot long and is a pony girder, bridge design. There is a line from the bridge to the beautiful stone pillars that still stand on each side of the driveway. The white picket gates still hang on the pillars greeting divers to the camp entrance. This Camp is still being explored to determine if any of the buildings still stand.

Dive Spot: Martha's Quarry

City/State Location: Lebannon, TN

Type of diving: Quarry

Picture:

Directions: (From their website)

Take your best heading to Nashville, TN then .....

Take I-40 east (toward Knoxville) to Exit 232. Go North (toward Gallatin) on Highway 109. After Crossing railroad tracks (approximately 3.5) miles turn left onto Quarry Loop. Then take the first left, at a white fence, onto Quarry Rd. Turn right at gravel drive with a steel, red and white gate, (just before railroad tracks).

Martha's is approx. 30 min. East of Nashville

GPS Coordinates: 36.221420, -86.439940

About the DiveSite: Large, 40 acre quarry with multiple "steps" down. Max depth is about 55'. Several buildings are still there, along with a greyhound bus, a sailboat, pumphouses, and an underwater forest. This quarry was used to help build I40. It ended up flooding quicker than they could get everything out. It is privately owned and is ONLY used for SCUBA. No boats or fishing allowed.

What to expect at the dive site: Fairly basic. One portapotty, air fill station is available, a dive store in a trailer is there on Saturdays (wasn't there the Sunday I was). Be aware of the brim! They bite and hold on to ears! :) Bass and catfish too.

Where to park: Good amount of parking next to the quarry.

Amenities/Facilities: One portapotty, "changing stations" (just half circle of cinder blocks  ), one pavilion, a "dive shop in a trailer", training platforms, air fill station.

Cost/Fee's associated with site: $30 at the gate. $20 passes available at a few LDSs.

Times Open: 9AM Sat till 6PM Sun.

Most recent date visited: 7-13-08

Website for site: Martha's Quarry :: The Mid-South's Diving Destination

Expected Vis: 5' to 30' depending on algal blooms. Fall and Spring are best for visibility.

Depths: Its a quarry, so its "tiered" down so to speak. Deepest is 55' I think.

Water temps: Surface temp is in the 80's in the summer, 50's during the winter. About 50 degrees at the bottom during the summer.

There is a great map provided by Dive Training that posts some of the great inland dives across the Southeast. You can access the Dive Map at Dive Training Magazine — Scuba's magazine for new divers and their instructors.. Pull up the map and click on the dive flags for specific information about dive sites. AND, you can suggest new sites for the map as well.

Dive Spot: Dive Haven GA Quarry

City/State Location: White, Georgia USA

Type of diving Quarry

You may want to update this post since they are currently not open. Everything is still there but there is no access. Rumors that they may open back up, but right now it is grossly overgrown.

Dive Spot: Ft. Pickens Jetty

City/State Location: Pensacola, Florida

Type of diving: Shore Dive

Picture: See Maps Below

Directions: Drive to the end of Ft. Pickens Road, take a left, and stop when you get to the curve. Dive between the two rock jetties (see maps below)

Google Maps Link: Google Maps

GPS Coordinates: N30 19.809 W87 17.554

About the DiveSite: Typical jetty dive. Should only be attempted at high, slack tide, as currents can be strong, and visibility can be effected significantly by tidal direction. Best to dive this site with someone who knows their way around underwater until you learn the ropes.

What to expect at the dive site: Salty water, sand, etc. Seriously, bring a knife because there is a bit of fishing pressure here. I've never been tangled, but I have cut some tangled fish loose. Typical life for the area. Watch for stargazers and torpedo rays as either can give you a shock if molested. In 2009 there was a single resident french angelfish too!

Where to park: This will be apparent when you get there.

Amenities/Facilities: Bathrooms and cold-water showers (both public and private) are within walking distance from the parking area. Camping is also available.

Amenities/Facilities Map: CLICK HERE

Cost/Fee's associated with site:
  • Per vehicle (1-7 days) - $8.00
  • Gulf Islands Annual Pass - $25.00
  • Night Owl Pass (After hours access) - $30.00
Get the pass, it's worth it.

Times Open: Fort Pickens area is open from 7 a.m. until 10 p.m. except for registered campers and visitors with Night Owl passes (available for sale at the entrance station). The road is subject to flooding during major rain events or from storm surge which may cause closure of the Ft. Pickens area on short notice.

Pros
  • Awesome Shore Dive!
  • Awesome Night Dive - Lots of phosphorous in the water
  • Easy to get to, short walk.
  • Large selection of critters to see, usually from 12 to 65 ft

Cons
  • Site is tide-dependent (dive at high, slack tide)
  • Site is easily closed due to storm activity, turning it into a boat dive
  • Site sometimes has a number of fishermen, though usually they are polite (especially the fishers on shore)
  • Site takes a few dives to learn your way around underwater

Most recent date visited: April 3, 2010

Website for site: Gulf Islands National Seashore (U.S. National Park Service)

Expected Vis: 0ft - 35ft Often on the same dive.

Depths: 12ft - 65ft

Water temps: 53f - 80f Depending on the season

Closest Air Fills or Dive Shops: Lots of shops in Pensacola

Dive Spot: Alabama Point Seawall & Jetties

City/State Location:Orange Beach, Alabama

Type of diving Shore Dive

Picture:
0012.JPG

Directions: From the parking lot of MBT to Jetties: 19.9 Miles (about 31 minutes).

(1) Turn right (West) out of the parking lot on Barrancas Ave

(2) At the light veer to the right off of Barrancas and follow Gulf Beach HWY (FL 292) all the way into Alabama

(3) Once in Alabama, FL-292 becomes AL-182

(4) AL-182 will bring you right to Alabama Point.

(5) Do not use the big parking lot at Alabama Point (to far of a walk) instead pass the big parking lot and go to the next road on your left (gulf drive) there is an abandoned parking lot there you can use which gives you close access to both the seawall and the jetty.

About the DiveSite: Both the seawall and the jetty are a good place to dive. Make sure to pull a surface flag with you and stay out of the boat traffic. This can easily be done as long as you stay fairly close to the seawall or jetty as boat traffic will stay far away. You also need to plan this dive at either high or low slack tide. High slack tide will give you the best visibility as more fresh/clean water will be in the pass during your dive. The best way to figure out when high slack tide is to go to http://saltwatertides.com/dynamic.dir/alabamasites.html and select mobile point (FortMorgan). Select the month, starting day, and how many days of tide info you want. Simply add 15 minutes to what ever the data says for high slack tide for Mobile Point (FortMorgan) and you will have a pretty accurate time table for high slack tide. Remember tide tables are pretty accurate, but sometimes Mother Nature doesn’t like to go by our clock so check conditions before you dive.
There is a lot of old rubble all along the seawall and remnants of an old pier located about in the middle. It is not uncommon to see southern stingrays, octopus, and various types of saltwater fish in this area. This isn’t a popular fishing location for nothing! Since this area is used for fishing, make sure to look out for monofilament line and carry a knife or surgical scissors to cut line if necessary.

What to expect at the dive site: A nice relaxing day of diving. During slack tide you can easily make your way up and down the seawall or jetty. If you are a bit more advanced you can wait for when the tide is just starting to go out and enter at the base of the rock jetty. Then just let the current take you on a drift dive to the end of the point. Then turn right and return on the other side of the jetty out of the current to the beach (this makes for a great dive, but a long walk to the car so plan for this if you chose to do this).

Where to park: There is a large parking lot right at the jetties. Parking is free. The best place is to use the abandoned parking lot on Gulf Dr.

Amenities/Facilities: There isn’t much in the way of facilities since the hurricanes. There are some port-o-johns located in the parking lot under the overpass. If port-o-johns aren’t your cup of tea there are some local businesses in the area if the need arises. Then there always is your wetsuit J.

Cost/Fee's associated with site: This site is free to dive.

Times Open: This dive site is open to divers 24/7. Many people enjoy night diving this location as well.

Pros and Cons: There isn’t a whole lot of depth to this site, but then again you will get a lot of bottom time to enjoy the site and practice your skills. This site is dependant on the tides. The current can move very fast turning tidal movements at this location, so diving around high slack and low slack tide should only be done. There is boat traffic through this pass so you must be mindful to not swim out into the channel. This can easily be accomplished by keeping fairly close to the seawall or jetty (which is where all the cool stuff is anyway). Remember to always dive with a dive flag to ensure your safety.

Expected Vis: Around 15-20 feet is a good stand-by. Of course visibility can go up to 50 feet or down to 5 feet, it’s the gulf and it’s always a bit of a crap shoot (Remember high slack tide will give you the best visibility).

Depths: Expect 20 to 30 FSW (feet salt water). Depending on how the current is moving the sand there can be a bit deeper areas from time to time.

Water temps: These are approximate water temperatures, check weather reports before your dive.
Summer: (Jun-Sept) 80*-87*
Fall: (Oct-Nov) 67*-80*
Winter: (Dec-Mar) 55*-67*
Spring: (Apr-May) 70*-78*

Closest Air Fills or Dive Shops: There are no air fills on site, the closest dive shops are:

Good Places to eat near site: This is by no means The List as there are many places to eat in Orange Beach near this location, but here are a few:
Other Comments: If you find something that needs to be added or deleted please contact the shop so that the appropriate additions and/or deletions can be completed. This handout is only a guideline for this dive site. Make sure to check weather and tides before attempting this dive. If conditions the day you go to dive this site seems to be a bit over your head, they are- wait for another day when things look better. This site can be a very enjoyable dive, just make sure you are up to it before you enter. Safe Diving!!!!!!
