Do any of you have an idea of the number of deep dives done by sport divers in a year?

I am curious to know the number of dives and divers that go to certain depths. I know the >800' is pretty well documented but I cannot find anything for "shallower" deep dives.

100M
150M
200M
>200M

Any information would be great.

Thank you,

Scott

I doubt anybody is keeping statistics, but you could have a look at the dive profile database that Ross Hemingway (V-planner) has amassed. I think you'll find a small number of 100M dives, and very few at all below that.

did not DAN have something about sending your computer dive database to them for some reaserch project,. If so they could give a reasonable estimate. perhaps not the numbers youare looking for but perhaps the distribution. 90% less than 120" 8% 121-200 ft. I remember something about it but the computer databse had to be compatale to thier project. the aeris database was not one of the compatable databases to merge with.

Peter Timm from Triton in Sodwana does around 10-15 100m dives a year. I also know that Don Sherley does around 10 plus 100m cave dives a year. Apart from this I doubt that divers will venture deeper than a 100 on more than 2 occasions a year. Maybe a handful divers below 200 once a year. The rest is world record country and outside "mortal" realms!!

Level 10 of the mine at Komati springs is at 110m (360ft). Alan Drake (and his buddy whose name slips my mind) are currently exploring and mapping unknown parts of that level. Recently they broke through a door that had been locked for the last couple of decades and are exploring what lies on the other side.

Alan and buddy also did a series of dives in the 110m to 150m range at Sodwana last year.

In this part of the world Dan will only cover these dives if the dive plans are pre approved by DAN. Therefore I would guess they have a database of some of the dives that take place.

You can also take it from the fact that we can name the few individuals who go deeper than 100m that this is not a frequent occurance.

There's quite a big "tec" scene here in Europe and I would guess there are a fair number of 100m+ dives per year. I am unaware of any reliable statistics (in fact any stats at all) though. "Deep" is 60m on OC and beyond that all the logistics of gas become a pain. The rebreather crowd are therefore the main deep (as in 100m+) divers. I'm OC so sorry can't really shed much more light on it. You could try the "rebreather world" forum though.

Scott: not sure those data exist.

I would suggest a little primary research (i.e. a survey either online or administered via phone). I would start with tech instructors teaching Advanced mix and CCR, then work out from there. Apart from that, no real suggestions.

I don't think anyone has any idea. How would they know? Who is keeping track of any numbers? I know none of the dives I have done would show up in any way.

The idea of looking at computer logs would leave out all of the deep divers who do not use computers, and there are quite a few of those.

Joe Citelli and Michael Barnette do the most 350 to 400 foot plus dives that I have heard of around Florida.
Michael is a scubaboard member.... aue-mike is the sb name of this mike, I think :-)
I know Joe Citelli, but he does not post on SB.
