So I went down to Key West for the very first time two years ago to dive the Vandenberg several days in a row with my buddy who convinced be to make the long treck. Long story short he ended up bailing on me and I flew down with my recreational gear. We were signed up with Captains Corner, a fantastic operation, but they do not like solo divers. This meant that for the ensuing four days I was paired up with strangers of vary levels of experience and none of them were trained to do any sort of penetration dives. I did have a great week and got to see all the nooks and crannies of the outside this world class wreck. Ever since then I was dying to go back with my doubles and deco bottles and do a nice long penetration dive. Well last month I finally did it! My wife and I drove all the way down from Charleston, SC with all my gear hitting some other spots along the way. I found a Charter, Lost Reef Adventures, that would let me do my deco dive and we got one day of just barely good enough weather to make it out. It was pretty sporty! I made a B line straight from to boat to the stern of the Vandy and found the opening towards the very bottom of the engine room. We spent a good 35 minutes slowly touring this gigantic room with at least four levels of catwalks trying not to disturb the sick layers of silt. Anyways it was one of the most rewarding dives I have ever done and and I'm just so thankful everything finally lined up. Here is a video of this one dive we did on the Vandy and I defiantly plan on returning to explore some more! This should go without saying but Ill say it anyways... This is an advanced dive below recreational limits within an overhead environment. DO NOT attempt to recreate this dive if you are not trained to do so or lack the proper equipment!
Cheers!
