Hi,

I had a simulated deco dive today, the biggest difference was that I had a 20 minute dive, followed by a 5 minute simulated deco on 80/20.

In contrast to most of my dives which made me feel a bit tired after the dive, this dive ended with me being even better than when I started.

Which made me wonder, other than price, what would stop me from bringing along a 13CF (or even bigger) bottle with 80/20 on every dive for the safety stop?

On repetitive dives this can be very nice.

What's your opinion on the matter?

Thanks.

If you can afford the O2 then I say go for it. Do a 5 minute stop at 20 feet or so on the mix after each dive. Will certainly help you offgas the Nitrogen quicker and yes, breathing almost pure 02 will certainly make you feel quite energetic.

Out of curiosity, why 80/20 instead of Oxygen?

Technically this would be considered technical EANx by NAUI. I noticed that you are Nitrox certified so you are aware of the MOD for EANx 80.

Just curious--what mix did you use for the dive?

This is really technical diving and you need to watch the CNS clock with high percentages of O2. Are you certified to dive with this mix? 80/20 isn't used as often as 50/50 or 100% O2. You can also bail out to 50/50 at 70 feet.

Perrone, I'm sure he was calling 80% O2 80/20 and there wasn't any He.
Why 80% rather than 100%-there are some that think 80% is safer to handle and just about as benficial as 100% and for some deco schedules there is little benefit of 100% over 80%, you can get on it a little sooner and when your doing a 20' stop in rough water 80's probably a better choice.
As far as carrying a pony with some 80 or 100 for a "boost" at the end of the dive I would think diving Nitrox to the proper mix would be simpler and about the same benefit

I totally agree with you as far as it actually being 80% 02. And I must admit that you are right. Just diving the proper mix of EANX for each dive would probably have the same, if not more benefit than hanging a stage at 20 ft.

In looking at your bio, I see you have a few dives and are O/W--Nitrox,,,very good. I don't quite understand how you might be doing sim. deco and diving 80/20 (I am going to assume you mean EAN80 and not TMx 80/20)......regardless, this type proceedure is only something you would partake in at min. Adv. Nitrox/Deco levels of certf. and dive profiles planned for this. If you are engaged in recreational diving and I think that is correct by wath I read,,,,diving with air/Nitrox is a great thing,,,,you should not reqr. staged deco on planned and followed through rec. divers----now safety stops-Yes...not staged deco stops though,,and that includes a 'deco' stop at 20' on EAN80....continue your safety stop at 20-15ft. on either air or EAN. Plan your dives around the proper air/EAN and stay conservativly within the rec. NDL's.

Do keep in mind that many divers are actively advancing their diving, and we have not been able to update profiles here in many months. I Know I've done nearly 40 dives and been in 2 classes since we had profile updates available.
