Under normal circumstances RH only goes a few dives sites (maybe 6 or 7) west of Calvin's Crack. I suspect they'd go about anywhere if the entire boat agreed to it but their own dive sites are so good I doubt you'll get agreement. I know they have gone to Mary's Place a few times when lots of people wanted to go. Several of their dive sites are east of the reef house and almost no one ever visits those sites. While it's nice to visit your favorite dive sites, new ones are always fun too especially when they are so nice. Their own house reef is a terrific night dive. I honestly think more people that visit Roatan should try more places. I've never been to CCV so I am going to try it one of these days. This far I've tried Reef House, Paya Bay, Anthony's, Bay Islands Beach Resort, the Bay Islands Aggressor and the Utila Aggressor. The Aggressors are the best followed by RH.

Under normal circumstances, I agree with you completely...and I love to check out new dive sites and check out new surroundings. It's just that in this case I consider it such a blessing to be able to watch the re-generation of a reef that I still want to be able to visit Anka's Place and see what has grown since my last dive there. It's not often we are privileged with such an opportunity!
I certainly see your love of that reef but it will still be there and growing for a very long time. I'm probably just jealous however since I don't really have a single favorite site or one that I'm following. I guess I like to see the growth on a few wrecks I've visited in the past but other than that I don't even remember most dive sites that well. Maybe that's the reason I like new places, I have too poor a memory (I'm getting older every day). I suppose I also enjoy just going to different islands and countries too but I alwasy seem to return to Roatan so it must be my favorite place.
Enjoy whatever you choose and have fun in Fiji next year. We dove at Matangi Island a couple years ago and hope to return some day.

Actually, we are leaving for Fiji in three weeks! I have a feeling we are going to love Taveuni as much as we love Roatan, but it's a lot more difficult getting there so it's great to have a favorite spot closer to home.

For a long time I never felt the urge to return to a destination for diving, i always wanted to try something new and my "favorite" dive was always One I had not yet done. Then I visited Fiji and it is one of the places i would go back to in a heartbeat EXCEPT, I hate the long air travel. I do visit Roatan a lot obviously with my house there but it is not been a "dive" trip for a long time and if Fii were two-three hours away i may very well own a place there but it would probably be much more overdeveloped and expensive as well.
One thing for sure, After diving there it will seem like much of the Caribbean, my beloved Roatan included, is in super low deffinition while Fifi is in Ultra HD technicolor

From what I've read, Taveuni doesn't seem to be over-developed at all yet. But I guess there's no way to know until we get there...I'll let you know!

I don't think any of Fiji is overdeveloped, My point was that it probably would be if it were as easy to get to as RTB. We did two weeks on the Agressor and then a few days on land and lets just say it was all spectacular and if you find the Roatanian Hondurans friendly then you will be at a loss for words to describe those from Fiji. A big Bula to You and enjoy the Kava
Another neat thing is you can enjoy the lionfish without feeling guilty and Oh my goodness, the crinoids, and soft corals, We started a competition to see who could get more colors in total saturation in a single photo. That was a little tougher as we used film and were limited to about 40 per dive if we packed our own film tight,

I guess it's just as well that Fiji is not so easy to reach...maybe it will stay undeveloped and we'll have a "paradise" to continue dreaming of. In the mean time I am very thankful for the amazing diving closer to home in our beloved Roatan. The friends we have made there and the experiences we have encountered will always be special.

Is there one particular "magical" month to go where everything aligns and comes together? Like...consistently great weather, and being able to do the big critters in the north and great stuff in like...ccv?

Of course things change from year to year - you never know...BUT my personal favorite is early July. It's before hurricane season has really gotten rolling but the water has had a chance to get good and warm plus it's the dry season.
I'm sure others have their favorite times for different reasons...
