I had the same debate. Running a So Cal corporate dive shop, I got through AI and debated Instructor. At the time I didn't because of the cost and now I won't because I'm burnt out. Be careful if you go scuba full time. Make sure you have something else you can do so you don't get burnt out on customers and other scuba duties if you go pro full time.

BS

The trick is to be employable and not JAFI (Just another F'n instructor). Language skills help immensely as do cross-over skills like mechanics, leadership positions, even IT.

The trap is that if you do this as a career, you have to look at it as a career and work your way in to a position where you're not JAIF after ten years in the game. THe natural progression is to manage and then own an operation, but there are other avenues for the savvy individual: photography, writing etc.

completely agree and something i stress to my instructor candidates. I have managed to make a career out of it but you have to almost create your dream position and for ma basically be a sponge, learn everything you can of anyone who is willing to share. I started as a OWSI with a masters in Conservation and now do equipment maintenance, web design, marketing, social media,.....
the list goes on.
It is feasible to work your way around the world just have to make yourself stand out from the crowd!
Good luck and happy bubbling....
