But no matter, once you surface and inflate, the boats will usually pick you up. What I want to understand is how did he drown. Even an emergency ascent from that depth would not kill...
I don't know the answer but remember that this was a OW student. Maybe he surfaced and didn't inflate, may he did a CESA/buoyant ascent and held his breath (which can kill you), maybe he got tangled in something, maybe he got bitten by a sea snake or stung by something causing him to panic, maybe lots of things. I hope they find out and publish the reasons too but there are many things it could have been.
 
Yeah. It would be good to know what happened. That way, it can be prevented in the future.
