I am heading to Daytona the first week in May...will a 3 mil be enough that early in the summer? Also, can anyone recommend any good charters out of Daytona? It will be the first time I have ever dove in salt water. Thanks in advance.

It depends! I dove in West Palm Beach over New Years and March 20 and 21 with a 3mm full suit and no hood in 74 and 75 degree water. If you can find out the water temp, that may give you an idea but I guess it matters how much you can take.

i dive off Jacksonville in May with a 3mm farmer john (i.e. 6 mil on the chest, 3 mil on extremeties) and no hood, and it's very doable. surface temps are usually in the low 70's
while you might get a layer down below in the mid 60's.

this year, i am going to start diving a hood (getting old). so you should be fine in
Daytona.

sorry, no info on their dive shops, but here is the Daytona area shops, from Florida Scuba: http://www.florida-scuba.com/daytona.htm

i've heard that Spruce Creek Scuba is a good place to go out with, but never been.

Since this is your first salt water dive, I would recommend driving about 1.5 hours south and diving out of west palm or jupiter. The dives out of daytona are rather far, like 20 miles out for reefs. But if you still wanna try it go with sea dog divers, they may be the only charter out of there. But the dives in jupiter and west palm are 60' reef drift dives, easy stuff, good for a first time salty.
