I have not read my policy in detail but I heard the recent stranded couple on the Today show mention their DAN insurance was going to cover their helicopter rescue. Not that there are many folks who have gone through this ordeal, but can anyone discuss a major rescue and how much actually DAN covered?

It does not cover the S&R.

So who covers it? I would expect S&R operations to be covered by the authorities that perform them, but that might be my silly European upbringing...

No. Not silly. The way it should be. As it is here in the U.S. too. Our taxes pay for the Coast Guard.

Yes, but why should our taxes pay to rescue a dumb arse who is stupid and has to be rescued during a massive S&R?

Because in such a dynamic environment it is easy to make mistakes, and one day the dumb arse might be you or someone you care about.

It is better than having to put your Visa on file before you go, you know, to make sure you can pay for the rescue...

I know some of the local Ambo services back home bill your insurance agency a flat fee for every time they get called to take you to the hospital.

BTW not being an arse but I hate when dumb arses get to spend my hard earned tax money and not me . . .

I didn't know Lynchburg, VA was in Queensland. Next time I make it to Oz, I'll look you up.:D

A press release yesterday by Dan suggested that they are only covered for the rescue only from the point of evacuation. That suggested to me from the point of being found.
The initial search will not be paid for by DAN.

It was also suggested that DAN would DONATE some money for the search.

:)

I am glad that you have almost no control over how taxes should be spent then. And you live in America so I fail to see how your taxes have been used to pay for the S&R? I do live in Australia, however, and am more than happy that my taxes have gone towards rescuing this couple. People do stupid things, but they shouldn't have to die for it if there is the option for them to be rescued.
