Hard financial numbers in the dive biz are hard to come by. Perhaps DAN is a proxy for the industry?

Member revenue may well correlate with the health of the industry?

DAN, or more correctly The DAN Foundation, Inc., files annual reports with the IRS that are public due to its non-profit status. DAN's 990 returns for 2014-2013-2012 are attached. On a slow day they make for interesting reading.

Some numbers, 000s omitted

2014 - 7,743
2013 - 7,723
2012 - 10,240

2013 - 402

Indeed! In the dive industry, it seems like we like managing with our eyes closed, for some reason...! There are many other industries where "industry numbers" are widely available - good or bad - and it makes it easier to manage a business.

For the dive industry in North America, I usually use the certification stats. It's not fully accurate but it gives a good idea. You can get it from DEMA.org.

DAN has gone through a lot of changes in the last few years. I would think that a significant part of the fluctuation in their numbers is due to internal changes.
