Spyder - look at that 60mm Nikon again. You'll find that just about every underwater Nikon photographer has it in their bag (or did before they moved on to the 105). It's a solid lens and was my first purchase. To me, macro was an easier way to get started than wide angle. I'm still working on that one.
My underwater lenses in order of purchase were the 60mm, the Tokina 12-24, and the Sigma 17-70. I got the Sigma because I kept getting drawn back to macro when I setup for wide. I like the all-purpose range that the Sigma gives me. I'd still bring out the 12-24 for things like big wrecks and whalesharks.
I also have the 18-200VR for land use, but don't have any desire to take it underwater.
