i put this in the nikon niche but no one replied please advise if u can thanks guys

hi all

i have a nikon d70 and ikelite housing do any of u have one,or are u familiar with the housing,im having a bit of a problem i think,im worried that i might have weakened or broke a part

im greasing up my housings knobs and buttons getting ready to go away to the red sea

u know the contol thing right below the shutter release button,it twists,it has 3 cogs attached inside the housing for adjusting shutter speeds,,the main cog inside the housing has a bronze screw on it,,i took it off to take the whole assembly apart to clean and grease and now ive noticed the the small steel plate that the bronze screw goes into is actually turning,,its shaped like a 50 pence peice (pentagon like?) i popped it out and has a double o ring, but now that ive put the whole asembly back together the 50 pence peice shape still turns,,, is this gonna leak or is the double o ring there to stop the leak

thanks everyone

There should be both a plastic washer and a metal washer on that insert bolt. The assembly should be:

(outside of case) Insert bolt, then plastic washer against front of the case.
(inside of case) Metal washer against inside of case, then spring, gear, and brass screw.

If you're missing one or both of these washers there may be extra slack in the assembly allowing it to turn. Try pushing against the brass screw inside of the case to confirm that the assembly won't push out due to improper installation.

In some cases there will still be a small amount of rotation of this insert bolt. This cannot be avoided and shouldn't affect the watertight integrity.

This is not a seal that we recommend attempting to service yourself. You should definitely take your housing to depth without a camera installed on your first dive.

hi jean

thanks for the reply

the spring is out of shape and not seated properly on the steel washer,im going away in 9 days donto i was thinking waiting till the last minute like this to get the housing ready,,would i be able to use a similar spring if i can find one. i doubt i could get a new spring from ikelite in such short notice

The spring only needs to push the gear out enough to engage the camera control. It probably got caught on the brass screw when you put it back together. If you take it apart again you can most likely straighten out the spring and reinstall it.

re seated the screw and spring, when i push the screw out the assembly moves out a tiny bit away from the housing, but nowwhere near as much as it was the day before i first posted here,,both o rings are now inside the housing where as before the first o ring was just on show,,do u think it will be okay??

Both o-ring should definitely be inside of the housing. As long as the assembly is screwed together tightly and it does not push back out when you press on the inside brass screw you should be OK. The only way to confirm that it won't leak is to water pressure test it or take it to depth--without a camera installed.
