gear? lessons? Heck, be a total idiot like me and buy a boat too......
I'm afraid that if I ever have large amounts of money that I'm gonna wake up one morning the owner of an exact replica of the Calypso with my LDS sitting inside it and waterproof androids with the minds of Mike Nelson and Cousteau preserved inside. And thats why I always spend all my money, so something like that doesn't happen :D.

I've been quite lucky with cost so far, my class and most of my gear have been payed for by my parents. Including the nitrox course I'm taking tonight I'll only have spent about $100 all together (which is still a fair bit for a teen without a job yet). I suppose I'll spend far more than over the course of my diving career ;). Perhaps I'll try to spend some of that extra money on Scubaboard when I'm less broke, Y'know just to brag about how I've spent on Scuba :D.

Wow! That's awesome!!!!!

:hm: Do your parents need an older daughter????

My children have also enjoyed the spoils of my addiction...

So far their certification and 25+ tropical dives haven't cost them a thing. Hopefully someday they'll actually finish university, get jobs, and support me in my retirement.

:rofl3:

You know it's an addiction when:

  • you sell all your possessions (home, car, etc.), quit your job with a pension plan and insurance to be a scuba instructor in a 3rd world country
  • live cramped on a liveaboard boat for months on end
  • are willing to work from pre-sun-up to way-too-late for days on end without a day off
  • are willing to work for less than any laborer in a Taiwanese factory would ever earn
Yes I have done all of these... much to my parent's consternation:shocked2:.
But my dive briefing on the liveaboard used to start, "I may be the lowest paid MBA on the planet, but this is the view from my office. It's a heck of a commute?":D

Welcome to the asylum.

:rofl3: If you can get rhwestfall and his boat, the owner of a diveshop, and a multimillionaire with a mansion in Bonaire to agree to be adopted I'll see what I can work out :D.

It's still cheaper than yachting or flying....

. . . or motorcycling, or horses . . .
