I know this gets asked every few months, but things change regularly in Coz. The last three times we have been there, there were new shops, changes in personnel and prices all over the place.

So, need a good list of current topshelf operators for 5 DM/OWSI divers for 3-4 days, probably an added night dive too. We are staying downtown without a car, so pickup near Cozumel Palace or Scuba Club would be beneficial. Prefer small boat op.

Thanks in advance.

Sunny, here is the last "Top 10" list that came about from the "Diving in August" thread that went to over 100 posts a few months ago. Do read through that thread as it was one for the record books.

My wife and I have been staying in town for the past 14 years at the Casa Mexicana and we've been diving with Tres Pelicanos the past 2 years as our last dive op was sold to new management and went downhill. We've booked another 2 weeks with 3P's this December so they are doing lots of things right for us. 3P's is a a dive op "By divers for divers" as many have described it here and on Trip Advisor (do check out the reviews on Tripadvisor as that's what we did when we had to make our move)... Small boats, dive your tank and DC, they take care of all your gear and free transport to the boats in the marina and back from in town. It's "boutique" diving without the "boutique" price in my opinion (especially for those staying in town). Obviously, we all love to crow about our current dive ops so I've done my crowing.

All on the Top 10 list are great based on the fanfare they garnered on that past thread so it just comes down to which one delivers the level of service and convenience you are looking for at the times you want to dive and the price you want to pay.

The list in alphabetical order was:

Aldora
Blue Angel
Blue Magic
Blue XT Sea
Bottom Time Divers
Dive with Allison
Dive with Martin
Liquid Blue
Living Underwater
Tres Pelicanos

Have fun!

And that was a partial list based on comments by a few. Nothing says it better than Christi's quote in the sticky at the top of this forum...
Anyone have recommendations for a good Dive op in Cozumel?

There are 80ish dive ops on Cozumel depending on what day you look. You're sure to find one to match YOUR needs. There's is no ONE BEST operator for everyone. Decide what your budget and needs are and seek out an operator that matches your needs. Specific questions should be directed to the dive ops you are considering as only they can answer questions re: their policies and procedures. When price shopping, please make sure you are comparing apples to apples – all dive shops were not created equal and have different service offerings.

Think about what you want in a dive op: big boats with 15+ people vs. small fast boats with 6 – 8 divers max; steel tanks vs. aluminum tanks; full-time seasoned crew vs. perpetual freelancers; valet gear service vs. gear lockers or hauling your on gear; computer diving vs. pre-set bottom times; divers choice dive sites vs. a pre-set shop schedule; bottled water vs. fruit/snacks/bottled water vs. full lunch on board; beach intervals vs. boat intervals; extras such as towels, jackets, etc.

Another option if you're staying downtown and want to get on the boat downtown is Deep Blue.

Never dove with them, but have heard/read enough about them to agree --- they'd certainly fit in the list of the 10 posted by deepsea21. Maybe we could make it like a Bakers top 10 rather than a Bakers dozen. :)

The good news is that once you nail down a few preferences (small fast boats or large ones with heads, amenity loaded or no-frills, etc.) it's hard to go wrong.

The main differences in the operations will be:

1. Tank size - Aldora uses steel 120s, I think living underwater may as well but I have never dove with them. The standard is an AL80. Most ops have Al100's as an option for $4 to $10 more. Steel 120 combined with decent divers makes for insanely long dive times!
2. Pick up point- either dive shop, down town pier, or cab to Marina (either Calletta or the new one)...some will pick up at the resorts
3-Surface interval location- boat, unimproved beach, or beach club. Some provide snacks, all I know of provide water. We stop at Mega(huge grocery store like a super Walmart) the first day and load up on coconut water and boat snacks. Coconut water in amazing for cramps and dehydration.
4- sixpack or cattle boat, I believe all listed will be small faster boats. A cattle boat would suck.
5- group ascent- this varies by DM, not necessarily operation, some will let you buddy up and ascend with a buddy, others all go up when the first person hits 500-700 psi. Some DMs will share air to extend or carry a pony if your with a serious air hog. I'm pretty sure that DMs in Cozumel actually have gills and only carry a tank for show and other divers.
6- # of boats, the more boats an op has, the closer in skill level all divers will be. That way you don't get put with a group of new divers when you are wanting to do Devils Throat. Either way, the diving will be amazing.
7. Price- most will run between $80 and $100 for a standard 2 tank dive. dive with Martin includes rental equipment with their price, most charge, some will include taxes (16% maybe), and marine park fees. None include tips. I usually tip $20 a day and open my snack bag to the crew...and the rest of the boat.

On edit- it looks like Dive with Martin and Tres Pelicanos can get into the 60-70 dollar range for a multi day package.

8. Valet service- Aldora, Blue Magic, Blue XTSea, and lots of others will take care of your gear for you between dives. It's easy to get used to!!!
9. Nitrox- all have it as an option, cost will vary I believe. It makes a difference for my wife and I, reduces the need for a long nap after 2 long dives. Some say it's psychological, I don't care. It works for us. Make sure you test your tank while a tester is available. Some don't have a tester on the boat.

With 5 divers, you can usually get your own boat and dive as a group with your own DM. That will allow you to adjust your dive times to fit your schedule. We did that with Dive With Martin 2 years ago while diving on a cruise. It worked out great and was about as cheap as going on a 6 pack boat. You won't get to meet other divers though. Sometimes that's a good thing...lol.

Christi with BlueXTsea and Dave with Aldora are huge supporters of this site and deserve a look. I have not dove with Blue XTSea yet but have with Aldora, Blue Magic, and Dive with Martin. There are no wrong choices, just the one that fits your needs the best based on the variables listed above. I have only heard great things about Blue XTSea, they fill up for a reason!

All ops are great about responding to email and have websites that Google will find in a few seconds. Great idea on the night dive! Even better than day diving! Watching an octopus change colors while trying to figure out why you can still see him is amazing!

i keep meaning to do a spreadsheet/chart of all the options.....just haven't gotten around to it yet. Most people have their favorite dive operator and will defend them like they are family. You just need to find your favorite....which will hopefully take several trips!

The scallops at Guidos are a favorite, ceviche at the Thristy Cougar, and lobster rolls at the Lobster Shack, burritos at King Burrito or Burrito Gordito are cheap and great, and lots and lots of other great place to eat. Bohemia Oncura is the best beer ever and only available in Mexico. There is a thread about favorite restaurants on here. Staying downtown is a good move!

Our preference is Casa Mexicana for the nice rooms, location, and breakfast buffet. We dive with Aldora for the tank size, #of boats, availability to dive when weather closes most ops, and their downtown pier is 1/2 block from Casa Mexicana. A quick breakfast and short walk and were on the boat. Aldora is more expensive, but the dive times make it reasonable for us. CM is about $70 a night. Suites Bahia is about $40 a night and includes the same buffet, just a 2 block walk to eat. Decent rooms, but older.

Good luck, safe travels.
Jay

I've been on many pangas with various Ops in Coz, but I really like my current Op's boats - one a little bigger than the other, but both so roomy and comfortable. Certainly not a sixpack nor a cattleboat - just nice.

Mine lets me do whatever I want. I usually shoot my own sausage and ascend alone. I'd hate to be the air hog that made the group go up early, or be stuck ascending with one of those - either way.

One day last month I had a private boat, DM, and captain. Hehe, the first day I tipped with a $10 and a few $2 bill, and the captain showed me the $2 bill he'd been carrying for fun since my last trip. :p

7. Price- most will run between $80 and $100 for a standard 2 tank dive
Or less.

DD, who do you dive with? I'm trying to put together an "ultra cheap" dive weekend option for when I can't stand it anymore. I'm talking Spirit air, Suites Bahia or less, carry on only, maybe take my mask and wetsuit only for gear, and 2 or 3 days of diving. Not willing to stay in the hostel yet, but 2 trips a year is not cutting it.

Thanks,
Jay

I've been going with Tres Pelicanos. Jeanie arranges some nice hotel & dive packages, but I just book my own hotel thru Kayak, Hotels.com (love their rewards program), etc. The last couple of trips I stayed at Suites Colonial, 2 blocks from their office which is 1 block from the Mexicana where the breakfasts are included. They furnish or arrange transportation to the marina.

Last year, I showed up with a pony that was out of viz, and asked Pony if he could get that done for me. He loaded me up in the pickup and ran me over to the top repair place on the island (forget the name) over near 60th avenue, where they explained that visual inspections are not required on Coz. TP vizes their own tanks, but my pony has not been vized in years. I'm sure that Pony knew that, but he took me over there for the expert opinion.

There are cheaper hotels in Coz without going the hostel route, downtown close to everything.
