Thanks Kari! That's exactly what I needed to know! I tried emailing the shop about it, but they never responded. May have to give them a call!

I would try get the materials on line thought the padi site or just get them with the course your doing at the dive shop.

The problem with second hand padi material is that padi ask for a special skicker to be sent off with each course completion aplication. This shows that you have contributed by buying their course material .

If you get it second hand you wont have that sticker!

Regards,

It's sensible in this economy to try to save money. But you should know that diving is NOT a cheap endeavor. By the time you buy all the equipment you'll need, the cost of the books will seem small.

U.S. does not require the sticker so don't worry about that. The used book should be fine as long as the knowledge review pages are still there and preferably not filled in, there hasn't been any REAL changes to the manual in a long time. My current books are 2.10. You will need the RDP table and a log book then you will be good to go. You could even get a binder and do a search here on scubaboard and find printable log book pages and make your own logbook if you really want to economize... and probably end up with a better log book.

That's an excellent idea! Thank you!

I decided to buy the crew pak secondhand. My friend had started the class but realized it wasn't for her after the first session, so it's not really used. I start my classes this Friday! I'm looking forward to it :)

Be weary of buying used PADI materials. They want you to tear out the quizes that are required in class and turn them in. In the event you get a used book it most likely will not have these quizes in them thus make you just have to buy a new one.

That hasn't been the case for at least 6 years maybe more. The instructor is required to check the reviews are done and corrected but NOT taken in.

To the original poster, those materials should be fine for the open water course.

A course sticker is NOT required and nowhere do PADI say you must buy the materials off them - it simply isn't the case.
As far as im aware for grades below divemaster there is no such thing as a course sticker anyway and the hologram is only for the instructor manual.

Admittedly im only familiar with PADI Europe, PADI International and PADI Americas policy but there is NO sticker of any sort required for that and no compulsion to buy materials off PADI. The above statement is simply incorrect!
