Hi everyone! I'm new to diving, and just signed up for a open water certification course at my local dive shop. I'm on a pretty strict budget, and would love to try and save some money on books. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get much information from the shop about exactly which crew pack I need so that I can buy it online. I have a friend who wants to sell me their crew pack. Could anyone who has the current book please confirm that it matches the following??

The back says O/W (open water) crew pack with adventure log $59.95
serial number is
8 02108 09498 7

open water diver manual product number 79180 version 2.09 slightly used
adventure log product number 70035 ver 1.04 brand new still sealed
product number 70198 ver 1.01 seems like a brochure of some sort
recreational dive planner brand new no number
dive table product number 66054 ver 1.2 new
and the blue bags they come in.

Have you checked to make sure that the dive shop are OK with you supplying your own manual etc?

Be weary of buying used PADI materials. They want you to tear out the quizes that are required in class and turn them in. In the event you get a used book it most likely will not have these quizes in them thus make you just have to buy a new one.

Scooby is right though most times when you pay for the class it includes the books and everything you need for the class. Check with them first and just ask. Nothing asked nothing answered.

Thanks for the replies. Yes, the shop is fine with me providing my own materials, and the quizzes are still in the book. I just want to make sure I'm getting the most recent edition.

$59.95 is a good deal if shipping is free. I usually see crew paks going for around $75.

Here are another 2 questions to ask the shop:

You will be required to watch the corresponding Open Water DVD as well. Does the shop allow you to come in and watch it or do they require you to own it?

Is the shop teaching the RDP, eRDPml, or Computers? If its the RDP then you are all set. If its either of the latter two, there will be additional expense.

A brand new crewpack sells here for $60. Remember you still need a rdp and booklet on use of rdp, a training log book that is yours ,not someone elses,so that all training sessions for academics and confined water can be documented, along with the required 4 ow training dives. The facility may require you to also purchase a dvd for $35. The facility makes next to nothing on these materials.

Thanks divedoggie. She's actually only charging me $35. I think the price on her crew pak says $59.95, which concerns me because I think the retail price is supposed to be $65ish. I'm wondering if I should just play it safe and buy the scuba.com dive pak for $44.95.

I asked the shop, and they supply the DVD, and teach the RDP, so I seem to be all set there.

I guess my main question is, can anyone with a current edition open water diver manual confirm that V. 2.09 is current?

I've got a v 2.10, but the reality is there's not much difference between the versions... have you asked at the shop where you're taking the course what they think? Depending on how new or old their stock is, their crewpaks may have that version too.

Good luck with the course!
