As islands of the Caribbean go, how safe is Curacao? What precautions, other than common sense, should we take?

I've seen a few trip reports for Curacao that talk about cars being broken into near some of the more secluded beaches. However, my personal experience is (having spent 3 weeks on Curacao within the last 18 months) that you don't have anything to worry about. Everywhere we went on the island (and we have been everywhere) was safe. Now that's not an excuse to leave your car unlocked with a camera on the front seat but I do believe that Curacao is one of the safest places in the Caribbean.

Went to Curacao on a cruise and I remember one of the locals telling us that the goverment is very harsh on any crimes comitted against tourists. They are working hard to build up their tourism industry.

Use common sense and you've got it. My GF and I are known to wonder off the beaten tourist path, unless told not to, we were fine. There are places that you will know by looking at that you just don't want to be there.

I've been to Curacao 5 times (92, 96, 98, 00, 03) and never had any sort of problem, or talked to anyone that had a problem. I think simple common sense should cover you.
