I got stabbed by a COT last year. The thorn went straight through a 3mm glove. It wasn't carelessness - I was moving it away from the coral. My hand went a little stiff, but no other symptoms. Talked to a dive medic about it and the advice was to get it cleaned out (I had already) and monitor myself for any adverse reaction - which can happen in rare cases and can be serious.
