Just curious..........

If you are a warm water BP/W diver and you don't scooter, do you have a crotch strap on your rig?

I have one on my rig and use it, but I am thinking it is a bit of overkill for an AL 80.......

Thoughts?

Thanks........M

The crotch strap helps the BP/W hold you further out of the water on the surface. Without it, the rig can ride up on your back, and you don't float as high. Since I like to be able to get my whole face and chin out of the water on the surface, I like my crotch strap.

Makes sense, so my guess that most (if not all) have and use the strap.........

Thanks........M

It could be overkill (or at least not terribly necessary) if you're not carrying more weight than you need, and if you have a defined waist which holds the rig in place.

Are you thinking of removing it? Is it getting in the way somehow?

Curious SB'ers want to know!

. . . given the widespread nincompoopery, incomplete thoughts/sentences, and primal-scream-level approach to communication seen recently, it's unclear to me how bizarre characters make SB threads any more difficult to understand than the users are . . .

Actually, I find it necessary with an AL 80. I'm 5'1" and when that AL80 gets to 1000psi (+bouyant) I can feel the tank bottom starting to lift away from my butt (the 2 times I forgot to attach the crotch strap when it was new) affecting my position in the water. I have less problem with this with the crotch strap. Something that doesn't seem to be as big an issue when I dive an HP80.

And ditto TS&M's comment...no riding up my back or pusing my head down on the surface.

Just another 2psi of opinion...

I keep mine in place on both my singles rig and my doubles rig. I don't dive aluminum, but would keep it in place regardless. When I go completely head down, my rig doesn't move at all. YMMV

I only dive single tanks (Al & SS) and use 3 different BPs. I started out with a crotch strap on my first rig but quickly determined it was unnecessary. I don't use one on any of my rigs. waist strap does a good job of keeping the plate from riding up much. If I really want to float high, I just fill the wing and roll over on my back.

Bryan.........

Only in my dreams would it get in the way..........

I have been known to reach between my legs and “rock back and forth” to be able to grab the strap dangling down behind me, not as flexible as I used to be…..I am sure it is not pretty or graceful..........

I guess I could just sit back down on the bench, but most of the time I don’t feel like dealing with others who are gearing up sitting down............

Just thinking about making gearing up easier.............

I didnt hook mine up once and when I inverted the plate had a tenedency to "lift". I find the crotch strap useful.

Hi Jorgy,

I live in Hawaii and dive warm water, using single Al80's. For all the reasons others have posted, I use a crotch strap with my BP/W. The AL80 does get "floaty" towards the end of a dive, and the crotch strap helps keep it where it belongs :D

Best Wishes.
