Front D ring scooter only
Back D ring SMB/Spool or reel

Mine are just for show. I don't use them for anything and never have. But they must be there for me to "look the part".
I tell students the 3 most important goals of any SCUBA dive are as follows:

1. Be safe.
2. Have fun.
3. Look cool.

(The last one actually ties back in to safety. Turning your SPG away from people when turning on your air makes you look cool and lets DMs on dive boats know they might be able to trust you. Dangling gauges and secondaries don't look cool and DMs on dive boats will know not to trust you.)

Sometimes I used the front ring for my reel which is dragging the dive flag. Most of my buddies take it for granted that I carry the flag.

I removed the front one since I don't scooter. I've temporarily clipped a DSMB to the rear one from time to time.

So they're kind of like a cork screw on a Boy Scout knife. Okay. So to keep this riveting discussion lively, let's talk about gall bladders.

Front? Besides the scooter, a double ender from my spool while getting ready to shoot a DSMB but it’s not there for long. Not going on the LS D-ring, already three bolt snaps there. Could put it on the RS D-ring but the front crotch strap has seemed easiest.

Rear? Like @Nick Radov shared, just my scooter when getting towed. As I train more, I’m certain reels will get parked there.

I will occassionally use my front d-ring to hold a small mesh bag or other tool while I am working or picking up small items, but nothing (except a scooter) is on it when I am swimming/moving locations.
