This was a Pacific Mexican croc. I do not know how they compare to Caribbean Mexican crocs. This article mentions that they were in the lagoon at night, in spite of warning signs, after being reassured by an unregistered guide. Woman in coma after crocodile attack, twin sister hospitalized in Mexico

British Twin Punches Crocodile To Save Sister | Scuba Diver Mag

A brave British diver leapt into action and punched a crocodile in the face to save her identical twin sister from its jaws at the weekend.

Georgia Laurie and her sister Melissa, 28, are back-packing around the world, and have currently been working in and volunteering at animal sanctuaries in Mexico. They had gone to Manialtepec Lagoon near Puerto Escondido on Sunday night to see the glowing bioluminescent waters and resident turtles.

However, while they were swimming, a crocodile grabbed Melissa and dragged her under the water. Experienced diver Georgia frantically searched for her sister and eventually found her floating face-down and unresponsive on the surface.

As she was swimming back to the boat, the crocodile returned and Georgia had to fight it off, punching it to keep it at bay until they could get out of the water.

Both women are now in hospital suffering from bite wounds, and Melissa has been placed into a medically induced coma as doctors are worried about risks of infection from the water they were in, and anything that could have come from the croc’s mouth. She possibly has a punctured lung, and is receiving help to breathe.

Apparently, there are warning signs that crocodiles up to three metres plus live in the lagoon, but according to the twins’ father, they had been assured by the tour company they were with that there were no crocs in the water and it was safe to go swimming.

Wow. Thankfully a rare thing to read of...but not rare enough for these 2 women. Psychologically traumatic on top of the physical injuries. This bit sounds odd "...and Melissa has been placed into a medically induced coma as doctors are worried about risks of infection from the water they were in, and anything that could have come from the croc’s mouth. She possibly has a punctured lung, and is receiving help to breathe."

I've not heard of putting someone in a medically induced coma because of risk of infection. Suspect something either got lost in the translation, or the journalist's understanding was a bit shaky.

praying for speed recovery

I agree,
...probably intubated due to lung injury and fully sedated so she doesn`t become combative and pull the tube out...

Lake at night with crocodiles present and posted warnings, yeah stay out...

Wishing for a full and speedy recovery for these two

Note to self, never pick a fight with and never get secret swimming hole directions from anyone named Georgia Laurie.
