Buuuuut, the face isnt covered with skins? annnnnd were skins added to provide warmth becaaaaause hair didn't quite "cover" it? or did hair disappear because we decided to suddenly cover our hairy bodies.

I find this one interesting in the context of this New York Times story of a possible newly-discovered major ocean meteorite impact in 2800 BC. Much work remains to be done on this, but it's interesting.

i have read about that one ... it's certainly interesting, but i think it's too early to tell

however, the timing (about 3,000 years ago) and the location (the Indian Ocean), are very tantalizing: it could have created a giant tsunami that then smashed into modern-day India, Pakistan, Iran, and Oman, and perhaps raced up the Persian Gulf
and up into Biblical lands

leaving the memory of a catastrophic "flood" that wiped out large parts of the population.

by the way, several cultures in the area left accounts of this "flood," whatever it was

(i can see Pug's antennae picking up ... but we'll deal with that later )

Oh man, I know this is in bad taste, but I wonder ... if they too walked ever outwards on the increasing surf zone for some easy fishing and shell collecting.

(upon reading...) So it boiled down what they saw is what they got? Talk about personal choice here - why wasn't other "less desirable" anatomical traits weeded out while they were at it.

In my search for articles on the genetic differences between people and chimps I came across articles suggesting that chimps be reclassified based on their genetic similarity to humans. If I remember right, one was even titled "chimps are people" or something like that.

I don't think it'll be long before they get to vote.

They may as well, humans obviously can't hack it. That's not a joke.

exactly!

that's why i think the heat control theory is the superior one. the jury's still out on this one, as far as i am concerned, though i think it could be a combination of heat control and parasite avoidance that led to less and less hair

(bonobos are also known as pygmy chimps, as opposed to common chimps)

i have watched bonobos do their thing for hours and hours, and they are incredibly human-like. watching the interactions of mother and infant, particularly, one gets the sense that these animals are just one step away from us.

Another possible "theory" is that they started wearing clothes, so the mates of other females wouldn't see exactly why they kept coming over every saturday for dino burgers and rhinosaurus milk, instead of going on the hunt with the rest of the group

We kept it all this time because if it works ... why change a good thing

Thus the "evolution" of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"
