There is considerable argument about this among the various christian branches. There are very few blanket theological statements that can be made about the beliefs of christians. Of course the convenient solution to this is to deny that anyone that does not subscribe pretty closely to a particular theological bent is not a christian. This is, of course, done fairly often, especially among the more ardent, narrow offspring found here in da' united stakes of a miracle.

My solution is to pray and read the Bible. I don't care what people call me or what some one else calls themself.

There are people who make up all sorts of crazy stuff that has no Biblical basis or basis in anything but their imagination. The other points of view are not all that varried or all that complex.

As for the statement that I made, read the Biblical text (all of it) yourself and see what it says.

What I got out of your post is roughly, because coincidental things happen, there must be a god. What did I miss?

It works for me. First off, I don't think that we would have a sun and atmosphere with clouds to make those cool sunsets without a God. We sure wouldn't be standing there looking at it. The fact that we can stand there looking at it and think it's gorgeous really drives the point home. The fact that some one who has seen as many as I have can still see new ones that top all the others drives the point right through me.

I say this as a former engineer who spent some time working with light and color measurement so I even know how it all works (though I'm probably a little rusty). In fact there is a fair chance that I designed the equipment used to test and/or produce the illumination in your car (maybe not since I've been out of automotive for about 7 years). Notice that it isn't as cool as what God does in the sky. LOL

Sorry, I just don't follow.

he has an idea ("there is a God") and that idea defines his existence. when he looks for proof of his idea, not surprisingly he finds it.

rather than letting his existence define his ideas (as a science-based person would).
if no proof is found of that idea, then the idea is questioned, revised, or even discarded and a new one adopted until the idea matches with observable reality.

I don't think that's quit it.

this line of rational baffles me. the same person that uses this as an argument to prove there is a god, is the same person who will discount all the horrors that exist in the world. sure, man's mistreatment of man is one thing, free will and all. what about floods, earthquakes, birth defects and disease?

another thing that gets me,

a bus crashes into a schoolyard, all on the bus dies, dozens of kids in the path of the bus dies, but one pane of glass on the bus is left intact with a stain the shape of Jesus, and people will claim it was a miracle.

In a nutshell, you told all non-christians they are going to hell, but didn't threaten them?

No, not at all. I can't send anyone to Hell. Ones actions or lack of determines the outcome. God judges by his standards not ours.

Religion, on the other hand, is quick to "crank up my screw". It often seems religion's only reason for existance is to muddy understanding and faith.

To me, religion is humankind's failing attempts to please God.

I don't think of my faith as a religion, but rather a relationship with a God who came up with a plan so we don't have to please him through the work of a substitute (Christ) to stand in our place. I think this is kind of like me changing my kid's diapers... it is not her fault she messes in them, but she does nevertheless. I love her, I helped bring her into this world, so I'll take care of this task for her.

Christ clearly states that the only way to the kingdom of God is through him. The Catholic Church has tried to soften this view, but the fact remains, in Christianity you either accept Christ or end up stir fry in the eternal wok. Anyone who says otherwise is making up their own version of Christianity. The concept of hell is central to the Christian paradigm.
