with all due respect to Mr. Hawkins, we really don't know that, and probably have no way of knowing (since our knowledge is really limited to the observable (post-Big Bang) universe)

though i suspect something like that did happen ... which begs the question, what is the "water" from which our "bubble" formed? (to use his metaphor)
