H2Andy:
do me a favor, go to your Bible, and open it up to Revelations. read the entire book.

(it's the last book of the Bible, you can't miss it :eyebrow: )

pay particular attention to chapter 20, verses 13-15

that is the fate of those who do not accept Jesus as their savior

i see.... myths like an invisible entity created the universe in six days even though the universe is 14 billions years old or so?

I'm glad you're such a scholar, Andy. Did you, read ALL of Revelation yourself? Maybe 20:14 where it said that also Death and Hades (the grave) would be tossed into the "lake of fire". If the lake of fire was a literal lake burning with fire would it make sense that something that is intangible like "Death" and "Hades" be tossed into it to be destroyed? Fire was symbolic all through the Bible for destruction.

Also, Satan, described there in Rev. 20 as being a "dragon", was originally an angel in heaven before his fall. Do you think he was magically transformed into a mythical beast or is it more likely that this is part of the vision that John was given and was not given to literal translation. In fact, go through Revelation and tell me that (if you believed in God and the Bible) you would believe that Revelation is meant to be taken literally.

I can't believe you are so smug (:eyebrow: ) knowing so little about the subject you are discussing.

So, Revelations is not to be taken literally, but the described 6000 year universe is? What should we take literally and what shouldn't we? How do you know?

Ummm....where did God ever put in writing that a "day" for him was 24 hours? I don't believe the creation of the earth took place in 6 literal, earthly days and yet I still believe in the Bible. Go figure. Which would mean that I don't believe that the universe is 6000 years old either, don't assume that I do.

If you want specific scriptures PM me, it's too long of a subject to break down in a simple post.

Sorry, I must have confused you with the rest of the literal Christians in this thread. Aside from not understanding the rational behind believing in the Bible I have a lot more understanding and respect for someone who accepts a scientific world-view and interprets the bible as allegorical rather than literal.

If you want specific scriptures PM me, it's too long of a subject to break down in a simple post.

Since I do not believe in the initial premise of the book, scripture is like reading Aesop's Fables, but thank you.

That sums up this entire thread, IMO. Of course, we disagree upon who is the smugger and who is the smugged.

Should I have written "IMHO" to avoid appearing smug?

Fuzzmutton:
Andy. Did you, read ALL of Revelation yourself?

of course i've read it, many times, along with most modern comentaries. unfortunately, i don't know Greek, so my readings have been in translation.

Fire was symbolic all through the Bible for destruction.

i see... so sometimes the Bible is literal, and sometimes it isn't?

when Moses saw the bush on fire, was that fire literal or metaphoric? the fire that could not harm Abed-nego, Shadrach, and Meshach, real or metaphor?

just curious...

and why get so defensive? if you don't believe in a literal hell, certainly you are aware that millions of Christians do, right? i mean, you ARE aware that for centuries, Christian theology has taught that the unbelievers go to hell?

also, just because YOU don't believe the univese was created in 6 days doesn't mean that millions of Christians don't happen to believe just that

or do you belive that what you belive is absolutely right and everybody else is wrong, including other Christians who interpret the Bible differently?

I can't believe you are so smug (:eyebrow: ) knowing so little about the subject you are discussing.

oh my...

because YOU didn't come across as a smug sob either:

Fuzzmutton:
well andy, I hate to think what Bible you read...

you joined a thread long in progress and came out swinging. expect people to swing back.

(and don't cry ... there's no crying in ScubaBOard)

SeanQ: No. You do not need the IMHO-Andy knows he is smug. It is what he does for a living. He enjoys it. Sometimes, so do we. This uber thread has gone on and on and will, most likely, continue so. Just something for folks to do in their cubicle.
