Is that really Bull Kelp? I always thought Bull Kelp was something different.
I thought so, maybe I am wrong? I always thought that "Giant" kelp was the monster stuff in deeper water that coats the surface and "Bull" kelp was the shorter, single stock stuff. I tried to find some info about the "common" kelp species at the Channel Islands.
The video rig is the following:
Panasonic GS-400 3CCD widescreen camcorder
Ocean Images Inc. Housing for GS-400 (with manual control and wide angle upgrade)
The red filter was off for this video.
I am very pleased with this setup. It seems to all be about manual mode with a fixed manually-set white balance. This video had focus set on auto, but I usually manually fix the focus about 12 inches from the lens so the camera doesn't search for focus (it always fixes on some particle in the water).
This camcorder and housing lets me manually control exposure as well, but I need to practice and not be in this kind of surge.
I found with this system that the red filter doesn't need to be used until about 60+ feet, but brightness takes a big hit. I dove a pinnacle at Catalina last week and used the filter and loved the results. Color totally came back, but it seems like only on sunny days as Sunday's deep dives with the filter was not viewable as it was too dark.
I would like to re-visit this spot when it is calm, It must be crawling with critters. Couldn't get near them with the camera in that kind of surge.
Cheers,
