Apple platform - my SWs connect sometimes - after several attempts

SW’s solution ? Connect, restart, try again, maybe it works

MacDive - connects first time every time

Kind of embarrassing and product depreciating - hey SW?

You do need to know that MacDive is a native iOS app. I am not sure about Shearwater app, but using native APIs compared to cross-platform apps (like Subsurface) could sometimes explain why it is better.

I had a time where I need to debug the packets a lot for libdivecomputer for the app i am developing on iOS using Swift. That's where the recipe is.

From my understanding, it is a lack of standardization of Bluetooth protocols in the industry... Someone like Subsurface can't predict how each computer will be "designed". Throw in a third entity like Microsoft or Apple and their standards, and it gets even more convoluted. Kind of like each company provides their own software for their own computer, and other brands won't work with it...it isn't Subsurface's fault, and some dive computer manufacturers have provided information to Subsurface to make them compatible while otherwise have not... Some may be so obscure there isn't a reasonable way to make them work together...

I think I have that right....maybe not...
You're kind of right. Since Subsurface is a cross-platform app, using a one-size-fits-all approach may not always be better. This might explain why MacDive works every time compared to Subsurface, as MacDive is a fully native iOS app, with Bluetooth built using its own iOS CoreBluetooth API.

I'm not entirely sure about Subsurface, but the last time I reverse-engineered their source code, they were using Qt Bluetooth for all platforms.

So yeah, sometimes cross-platform free apps have their downsides too :)

Just pick what's best and most convenient for you guys.

I can never get Subsurface working with a PC consistently. I'll get it working and then it won't the next time. I just use my phone to download, PC to view afterwards. That works 99% of the time.

As for SW I do the same thing but never really look at the dives through their software. Just good to have it backed up there too I guess.

Another unimpressed user.

Since the recent update I've had nothing but issues trying to transfer dives from my Petrel 2 and it no longer automatically displays the list of dives and has to be prompted with something to show the dive list.

I don't trust any dive log software. They all have issues at one point or another.

I use Excel as my "official" dive log. Every dive since certification has been logged there and is still there. I never have to worry about incompatibility or losing dives or having them magically altered somehow. I've customized it to meet my data collection needs and have added formulas to calculate all of the metrics that matter to me. I use SW Cloud to get the data to record after each dive day but could just as easily pull it off of the computer itself.

YMMV but it is nice to not have to fret over my dive log software.

Thank you for leaving all the feedback. The developers have been busy looking into a lot of issues reported after the 2.12.0 release and working on a series of patches.

To bump up any of the issues in priority please leave a message at info@shearwater.com

In the end, your data is your responsibility anyways. You are responsible of backing it up. Nothing lasts forever, be it hardware or software.

They must have teamed with SONOS for software development.

Love my Shearwaters, but completely unimpressed with the logging software. I've basically gone to Subsurface for that (and it too can be problematic, mostly download/connectivity)

Le sigh....
Love the reference to SONOS … and their god awful product managers.

Shearwater should not be in the log software business, it is horrible.

MacDive was my favorite however sadly the developer now has a personal and professional work life so updates are basically non existent. I am now playing with the Dive Log app for iOS and MacOS.

Luckily I have not had issues with Shearwater Cloud although I have not updated to the latest version.

However I agree with the comment above that my real dive log is in excel where I can do statics and never worry about losing my log.
