Maybe buying one down there (unless you can get some serious use out of it) isn't the greatest idea. Even a $70 rental for my wife and myself ($140 total) would be equal to 30 taxi trips...

"what would Christy say?"

She would say NO.

(You could do it in Lahaina though.)

I have not been impressed that divers in certain countries respect cylists very much.

Now you've got me confused. In your first post you said:

Hi All,
...An idea we had last time (from walking back and forth to town countless times from the Caribe Blu) would be to pick up some cheap bikes, ship 'em down there to ride for the week. ... I would even give the bikes to the Cairbe Blu for loaners when we're done. Would the shipping of such a sizable box be outragous to the point where it would be silly?
Thanks for your thoughts,
Tim

I confirmed that shipping them here would be outrageously expensive, but that for less than $100 each you could get some decent all-purpose bikes here.

Now you say that

Were you thinking that buying two cheap bikes in the states and shipping them would cost less than $140? And besides, I haven't been able to find a place that rents bikes here yet since Isleta closed.

What happened to your idea of leaving them at Caribe Blu from your first post? You could still do that if you purchased bikes here, and then the $75 ish per bike is not wasted.

Just throwing out ideas and options.

I had to think about that one for a minute. Did you mean to write drivers instead of divers? What are divers going to do to cyclists? Throw their fins at them? ;^)

Actually its not a crazy idea, its a very good one given the horrible parking situation now.

You can usually buy a new bike at Chedraui for not much more than $100, or as a last resort cross the channel to Playa and Sams club always has $100 bikes. There are little bike shops all over town (back in the real town) where you can pick up a used one for less than $50. Or some hotels have them for their guests to use for free. Hotel Cozumel did at one time, and I know that the Villa Aldora and New Hotel Fontan still do--others should. But be sure to also buy a lock since while crime is not rampant in Cozumel, bikes are one of those things that seem to be fair game.

And when you are done with it bring it by as I need some more bikes.

I just called (the PDC number), and they did not reopen the shop in Cozumel again after Hurricane Wilma.

Ut oh!! Buisness op!!!!:D

Sharky's bikes, Shark spokes, Sharky's rent-a-bike...Sharky's bike & grille!!

The thing about Isla bicycleta was that they had really good bikes, mountain and road bikes, that you could really use as transportation, and enjoy that nice ride out to the east side. Especially with the constant breeze in Cozumel much of the time, it make a big difference (to me anyhow) to have a decent bike if I'm going to do any extensive riding. Maybe someone will take up the cause.

If indeed we could get a couple halfway decent bikes for $50 each, that would be even more interesting. As far as me changing my mind earlier (Sorry Christi), I would still donate any bike(s) if we went that direction. I wasn't hell bent in one way or the other.

No need to apologize...I was just confused as to what you were really hoping for/expecting to do.

Cheap bikes are in fact easy to find here and I see Dave has even offered to take them off your hands at the end of the week if you decide to purchase some! So I think that's going to be your most economical option :)

Have fun and be safe!

seriously? Bag the bikes. We went to a shop downtown, right off the main square and negotiated a 16 dollar a day rate for a scooter including gas and everything.

It was a BLAST. We had a ball zipping around on that scooter and we pretty much covered the island. We went from the lighthouse clear down to El Cedral and back, we went from our hotel (mi casa en cozumel) to the dive shop (DWM) and back with all our gear (gear in a bag on the foot rest between my knees) and with me and the wife on it no problem.

I was worried about it cause I'm huge (6'5" and about 330 lbs) and my wife is very tall 5'11" and I thought it would struggle. it did 60kph easily and was easy to drive.

They are also very easy to park anywhere. A bike would be fun but nowhere Near the utility a scooter gave us. I'd look into that. Ours was about 100 for the entire time we were there. You couldn't buy or ship a bike for less than that and I think you'd lose the bike between every trip, or the tires would be flat or something.

honestly, we had as much or more fun zipping around the island on the scooter as we did diving. And I think we saw pretty much every place on the island, or close to it.
