Sounds like someone else got the gig... they are planning on diving Tuesday although he says he will "keep my number." I wonder if I should be worried...

this is the email I received today... I do not have a boat, but I bet we could get Lake Travis Scuba to charter us out there. Still hasn't said anything about how much he would pay. It is supposedly a new listing in the Austin Craigslist. I don't have time any more for a couple weeks, my last open weekend was this one on the 4th so if anyone else wants to give it a shot... go for it!

I relisted it as Scuba challenge see below
I do not have a boat or GPS
You will need your own boat and GPS and any other supplies to locate and retrieve my sail boat rudder, tiller and gear, max weight of each item is 20 lbs.
Location approx 1 mile from Mansfield Dam at an approximate depth of 80 feet
If interested reply with a phone number or e-mail address to discuss details.
Let me know if you are still interested

I'd be up for it! But i'm too far away :( Well, depending on how much he pays, that is....

Money talks... :eyebrow:

This is a copy of the email I got from Ed,

I have had several responses and will make the same offer to each of you.

My name is Ed and my email address is eg71117@aol.com my cell phone number is 826-6845

I undestand this is a long shot and I will pay upon recovery;
$175.00 for the rudder, tiller (weighs about 20lbs)
$ 75.00 for the trolling motor. (It is a small unit and weighs about 15 lbs)
$25.00 for battery (It is the smallest battery I could find)

Lake Travis, 80' with questionable GPS, sounds like a 1 in 10 shot at best.

Well, my dive gear is in route to Florida w/ K-valve, otherwise I'd consider giving it a shot. If it's not recovered by the 20th, I still might. I'd expect $100 per hour plus boat arrangements, find it or not. Otherwise, it's a fun dive and any recovered items could then be sold back...

I'm really curious about the GPS coords. IMHO, the part of the lake is big factor from a difficulty / safety factor. 80’ means it’s not likely in the river channel (around 111’ right now I suspect), which is good b/c it probably hasn’t sunk into the silt beyond sight, but also means it could be on a slope or wooded part of Travis, especially if near shore (not sometimes island). I’m not a fan of dropping vertically into trees w/ zero vis.:shakehead:

Last vis reports I’ve seen are pretty bad deep, especially if dropping straight vertical, which is the most practical way I can think of to hit a GPS coord on the bottom. If it’s close to sometimes island, chances are great that there are no trees, as most of the middle of the lake was cleared out before the lake was filled.

If that’s the case (no trees), a quick descent on the coord after checking depth to avoid smacking the bottom would be no problem. Then tie off a reel (assuming you can find anything to tie off on) and run a circular search pattern. With two divers working out 10' per lap, you could probably cover a 200' diameter circle before hitting deco. More w/ some visibility...

Just my thoughts… location on the lake would be my biggest concern. Trees would change the entire game plan and personally I wouldn't attempt it.

Totally agree with you on that. Not worth the risk, IMO.

Wonder what kind of hazard the battery would pose to equipment and body??

NO money in hand....no get wet.

hmmm, it would be an interesting challenge, but I don't think a net profit of around 100 bucks is gonna be worth it.

Whoever does pull it up, though, give us a description of what you did, please!
