During My EFR I learned the following CPR Technique.

Adult - 2 Rescue Breaths followed by 15 chest compression for a cycle of 4 in 80-100 secs Compression Depth 1and 1/2 to 2 inch ( two hand)
Child ( 1-12 yr) same but compression depth - 1 - 1and 1/2 inch ( one Hand )
Two person CPR - 1:5 ( rescue breath vs compression) for 6-10 cylces

Infant (< 1 yr) - Check Brachial Pulse instead of carotid - cover mouth and nose while giving CPR with two finger compression depth < 1 inch 1:15

Before starting give intial five rescue breaths and then check pulse.

Is there any recent changes to these procedures in EFR course

Don't actually know about CFR, but I just renewed my Red Cross Adult CPR and they are now teaching 2 rescue breaths, 30 chest compressions, and repeating for 60 compressions a minute. Compression depth still 1.5 to 2.0 inches. They don't have you checking for a pulse anymore, just breathing and "signs of life."

Changes, as outlined by Don, were just made this past year. All the agencies are slowly changing their materials and implementing the change in standards. By the end of next year everyone who keeps their cert current should be updated.

I just got my Diver Alert ( Apr-Jun 2006) issue. The International Liason Commitee on Resuscitation ( ILCOR) has released new procedure for CPR in Nov 2005 . This procedure is being implemented by most of the agencies. The proecdure is as follows:
DRABCD -
D -Assess Dangers
R - Assess Response
A - Open Airway ( Head tilt chin Lift only) and look for sings of life - Look Listen feel for breathing
B - Give 2 rescue breaths if not breathing normally
C - If not breathing Give 30 chest compressions followed by 2 rescue breaths no need to check for pulse (unconcious victim)
D- Attach AED as soon as possible and follow the prompts

For Child also you now use both hands for compression instead of one hand
Rescuers are no longer taught to stop compression periodically to re- check for signs of life. CPR is continued until : (1) Signs of life returns (2) Qualifed Help arrives 930 rescuer cannot continue due to exhaustion (4) An Authorised person pronounces life extinct.

AED shock cylce is also changed from 3 to one shock followed by 2 minutes of CPR and further re analysis and further single shock and 2 minutes of CPR sequence

A brief overview for adult CPR is a new 30:2 compression to ventilation ratio. Also compression rate should be at 100 compressions a minute. 2-person CPR is the same compression to ventialtion ratio as well. Any other questions check out the link or drop me a line, I am a CPR and ACLS Instructor, so if I don't know it I will find it out...lol.

Thanks Scuba Scott. The link was quite useful . I saw you are a DAN Diving Emergency specialist. Can you enlighten us what exactly you are taught in this course.

Andy,
A summary of the DES course can be found at: http://www.diversalertnetwork.org/training/courses/des/index.asp

A brief overview of the requirements are:
Current Certifications In:

1) Oxygen First Aid for Scuba Diving Injuries (or equivalent)

2) Plus three of the following:
a) Advanced Oxygen First Aid for Scuba Diving Injuries (or equivalent)
b) First Aid for Hazardous Marine Life Injuries (or equivalent)
c) AEDs for Scuba Diving (or equivalent)
d) On-Site Neurological Assessment for Divers (or equivalent)
e) Remote Emergency Medical Oxygen (REMO2&#8482:wink:

3) You must also hold:
a) Rescue-level certification or higher with your training agency
b) CPR Certification
c) First Aid Certification

Mind you, a lot of my "certifications" fell into the equivalent level, because I am a Paramedic and a ER Nurse, that counted for almost all of the courses I needed. :D
