We always "schlep" out to the street. Taxis will not stop at the traffic circle, but you can cross the street to 65th. I've never waited more than a couple of of minutes, and I save enough for a night dive or a couple of good dinners.

For my wife and me, the shuttle to BA is US$16, total. A taxi from the circle to BA would be about $10; you must eat and dive very cheaply. :D Not only that, but we'd have to haul our 150# of equipaje (plus carryons) 100 yards in the hot sun out to where there might* be a taxi.

*My sister and bro-in-law did the walk one time but didn't know that it was right after the taxi company and/or the police had cracked down on taxis picking up air travelers out there, which they do from time to time. It was over half an hour before they got a taxi to stop for them.

There is no way to quote taxi prices anymore. They seem to be making up their own prices as they go.
There are set rates. They're based on zones not distance. The driver is required by law to have a rate sheet and present it to you if you ask...

If you're staying at a hotel, ask at the front desk or ask the bellman at the door what the price should be to your planned destination. They always know the current rates and often the front desk will have a copy of the current rate cards to show you. Before you get in the cab, ask the driver the price. If he tells you something higher, question it. If he insists, either ask to see his rate card or pass and wait for another taxi. There is no shortage of taxis in Cozumel and no need to give your business to one that is out to rip off vacationers.

We always have two or three teenagers with us and the shuttle price is per person. The walk and cab is just part of the fun!

Sounds like for one person, the shuttle bus/van is only $8.
To BA, yes. In order to save "significantly" by hiking for a cab, you've got to have several people. Then again, several people means several people's luggage to haul and fit into the taxi.

Well that, or be staying in town where the cab fare could be as low as a couple of bucks...

The information here: Cozumel Taxi Rates is a little dated, but is worth printing off and carrying with you if you are afraid of getting riped off. You can always ask the taxi driver to see his copy of the rate sheet. FWIW, the vast majority of cabbies in Cozumel are honest, hard-working people.

We were in Coz a couple of weeks ago, stayed at Fiesta Americana, which is south of Caleta harbor a little. It's cheaper to pay for cabs in pesos. Cab fare into town was $10 US or $100 pesos... about seven and a half bucks if you get a good exchange rate. Our hotel had the best rate we found 13.2 or 13.3 / 1 or somthing like that.
