For the island, certainly, but it would be a challenge for the rest of us as well.

Agree. My husband and I just "discovered" the joy of Coz two years ago; we had previously been doing a lot of liveaboards and going to Cayman Brac. It is sad to think this new-found place of diving may be overrun with cruising. At a minimum I hope it is the smaller ship, if Royal does succeed in making Coz a home port.

I just don't log dives
A year ago on my trip to Cozumel I swam out to the Cozumel Restoration Project area which is a coral growth area. They have an underwater view camera which is pretty neat, (but I just found it offline). Has anyone seen or know anything about their progress or successes?

I often see people cleaning the corals in that area. Also to note....that is the location of the proposed new cruise pier.

Cozumel is my favorite place on earth for so many reasons, but it used to be so much better before they had 10 cruiseships per day... I remember one evening in 2019 having an early evening drink watching 7 cruiseships all leaving, I said "my god, do you realize as many as 21,000 people have just left the island...?"

Please no; the onshore infrastructure cannot handle it. Around cruise ship departure and return dates the airport, taxis, hotels, restaurants, etc. would be a hot mess. I have been going to Cozumel since 1978 but that could spell the end of my trips there.

Its already a hot mess. Ive theorized it for years that 3 cruiseships docked overnight would bring the same revenue as 10 docked for just a day. Just a guess though.

But now no one on a cruise ship even docked overnight would likely want a hotel room, and since the meals are free aboard ship (i.e., paid for already) not many go to restaurants. That would all drastically change if Cozumel would be turned into a cruise line's home port.

Wish it was april fools post. The new pier has federal approval and was supposed to be started past december. The location is just before sunset bar / sandollar sports. I heard of talk that it may be a home port in future.

Before when the ships docked overnight, restaurants were reservation only... Pepe's even enforced a dress code...They required collared shirts and Khakis! Carlos n Charleys was packed in like sardines and the crew would come around with wine pouches full of tequila and squirt it in your mouth... Noone left CnCs sober... One night I stood on top of a table and flung the melted ice water from my corona bucket out over the crowd LOL
