It is a boat orgy. Long trip out in small boats. About 8 persons plus crew. No guarantee on sightings.
We set it up through the travel agent so everything was set up (bay adventures) . You can also take the ferry to Cancun.
From Coz take the 6:30 ferry to Playa De Carmen, tour guide picked us up and drove the 1:20 to Cancun. Get on boat. Sit and wait for 30 plus miles. Look for sharks. Be ready to jump in a s a p. We were lucky and first in and saw two. By the time we got back on the boat, there were at least twenty five other boats nearby. Then the search continued for the sharks.
They really try to limit too many people in the water at any given time, so if you're in the right spot at the right time, you get to get in. Of the seven of us on our boat, two never got in the water. The sharks went deep and never saw them again.
Granted, it is still kinda early in the season. We hung out for another hour, looking for them. And eventually left.
I probably would have a more positive experience if there were more sharks and more opportunities to jump in the water, but it just wasn't that day. I've heard of plenty of people having fantastic experiences.
Overall, I'd say it's a one and done. And i've heard it's a better, more natural experience than in the philippines, where they bait the water, and it's a CF with sixty people in the water at the same time.
Also, it's very deep water, makes sure everything is attached securely. My buddy had a GoPro in her hand and the guide yanked her away from the boat, and in that moment of !!!?!!, she let go of the gopro...
When we did the whale shark tour there were more in the water, but we were so time-limited AND we had to wear those vests that kept us from being able to descend to see very much. It was also much earlier in my diving experience, so I was a nervous nelly so I think I could have done more to help myself out if I had the same opportunity today. But same as you, it's a one and done experience for me. Cool to see something that big in the water.

Did you friend lose her GoPro or manage to retrieve it?

Captain Obvious says: Never jump in the water with a camera or anything else of value that is not securely attached to you.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.. Dumb mistake on her part. Sucks. Lesson learned. thanks for adding value. Maybe others will heed that advice.

@Kimela we paid the $18 to rent a shorty so we didn't have to wear the lifejackets. Still I was clunky as all get out as one could be. Guide dragging my buddy, while I, with jet fins (not a good choice of footwear) was swimming as fast as my over 60 yr old body could go and it felt like pushing water.. And my camera, housing, light did not help.
No matter.. The life jacket or shorty was meant to keep you buoyant. So when I saw the gopro dropping down with a 5 ft headstart... No way could I chase it.

We stayed at the 'Cuda or first 4 - 5 trips to Coz. There is still something I love about it. The rooms on the 3rd floor were always the best!
