Hi friends,

My husband and I have been diving in Cozumel several times, but always in December. We just booked a trip for March 2015, and I'm curious what others' experiences are with typical marine life that month. I've read that there are a lot of eagle rays there at that time, but I've also heard otherwise. If you have seen anything exciting there in March, I'd love to hear about it!

Thanks,

Katie

(reposting since I meant to put this in the Cozumel forum)

Hello and welcome to the board. Eagle Ray sightings are usually dying down in March. January is the time they are usually seen in squadrons in the north although I think they were late this year. That said, I can nearly always find something to interest me any time of the year that I am diving. I live in Cozumel in the winter, so dive from December through to April (and then other months when I visit for shorter periods). In March the water is starting to warm up although I have seen some very crazy-ass currents then. Not just fast. More like changing direction, down currents etc. and sometimes causing underwater sandstorms.

We saw eagle rays last March, heard there were squadrons to the north but with our younger son we never got up there.

Saw a few eagle rays when I was there last March. Although they can happen any time, less chance of a Norte in March. Weather is warm and pleasant. You will enjoy yourself :)

Perhaps it is time to start a March thread

Thank you for the feedback everyone! We love diving in Cozumel, so regardless, I know it will be fun! Thank, Katie

We've been several times in March and will be there again in 2015. We have experienced nortes two times, but went to dive cenotes or went to the west side and stayed dry. We have seen eagle rays every time, one or two at the southern sites, and then 8 up north of town. We have not experienced the crazy currents, but have friends that were there a week after us and said they were nuts! Weather is generally mild, but can always get hot and humid at a moment's notice, or even downright chilly (for the Caribbean) if the winds come through. We have been in late November twice as well and find the two times of year to be very similar. No bad time to be diving in Coz IMHO. Have fun, maybe we'll see you there! March thread?? Too soon??

In our 2 weeks last March the weather was great for walking around, only on the last day was it nasty hot and humid. To the point we won't be going in the summer, it's nice not to have a rental car but not with that kind of heat.
