Sorry Nevis Diver... I just have to post my top ten list:

Please, please, please do NOT rent a scooter. Everyday here in Cozumel, people are scraped up off the roads as a result of moped accidents.

Sally's Top Ten Reasons Not to Rent a Moped:

10. Most Cozumel streets are one way, except where they aren't.

9. Most north-south streets have the right of way, except where they don't.

8. Patches of gravel appear in the most unlikely spots, making it easy to skid and
topple.

7. The brakes on most of the rentals are not in "perfect" condition.

6. Beautiful seaside vistas take your breath away, and your attention off the road.

5. Many tourists have just been to Carlos 'n' Charlie's and are now behind the wheel of a car.

4. Taxis are racing to see how many fares they can transport in one day.

3. Mopeds have a short wheel base which makes them less maneuverable than, say, a motorcycle. (That's for all of you thinking that if you have a motorcycle license, a moped is a piece of cake.)

2. Mopeds do not have adequate acceleration to get you out of a potentially dangerous situation. (Again, for the motorcyclists out there, you understand what I mean.)

1. Given 2-10, a little road rash is enough to ruin any vacation. Going home in a box falls into another category.

Please be safe, spend a little more and surround yourself with a rental car. Return from your vacation in one piece. Mopeds are not an adventure, they are a danger.

Good list; I have to add one. I have been told several times by folks who live on Cozumel that by a large margin the number one cause of the need for medical attention by gringos on the island is - you guessed it - scooter accidents. My brother put one in a ditch and spent some time in the emergency room a few years ago, and it was no fun. Rent something with four wheels.

Nevis,

I have been to Cozumel one time for a week. In that week, I saw two very, very bad moped accidents, and one scrape-up. Its not taking your life in your own hands, its giving it to evrey one else on the road.

My 2 cents

I just received a email from lesspay rental in Cozumel they stated there jeeps rent for $35 plus $10 insurence. Is the about the normal rate? And does anyone have any experience renting from them? I have to make sure to get to the waves side of the island. Does anyone know if I beleive it was call Bob Marleys on the south end of the east side of the island is open and running?

I have rented from Less-Pay and had good experience with them. $35 is a good price for a Jeep for the day without listening to a timeshare pitch.

Bob's Marley Bar (aka Paradise Cafe) is no more. They plan to rebuild, I hear, but when I went past it a couple of weeks ago, there was very little of it standing. Likewise Punta Morena. The building at El Mirador is literally gone without a trace.

But Mezcalito's, Coconuts, Playa Bonita, and Chen Rio are all up and running. I think that Rasta's (the place across the road from Paradise) is open again, but I am not sure.

Well I hate to hear that about Bob Marleys... I really like the beach right there and always a cold beverage a stone throws away. Any advise on the other locations on the east side of the island? I am looking for a spot with alot of beach and an establishment with cold adult beverages not to far away from the beach.

Thanks to you all for giving serious advice for the sake of my safety. I truly appreciate it and wil take your suggestions to heart.

You could also think about the guys that race at almost 100 mph or more on the mile stretch just out of town.

All the places over there are great, IMO, but the one that is the most similar to the Marley Bar is Mescalito's, i.e., hammocks overlooking the water. All of them have beer (etc.), music, and (except for Coconuts, which is on a cliff) beach.

I have never seen anyone going nearly that fast anywhere on Cozumel, but anyone who would go at such speeds on the road east of town is clearly an idiot.

It was south of town where the road is very straight for more than a mile. The police had the road blocked and you had to get off on the parallel road. They were racing two at a time and were getting up to very fast speeds....no helmets.
