Thanks all. Looks like can't go wrong either way. Probably will come down to $$. Can't wait for the trip!! 63 days of snow to go.

If it comes down to $ then FA is the better value. I stayed there in December and had an excellent time.

Five star in Mexico = 3 star at best real world. I have stayed at both numerous times. Presidente is much nicer than Fiesta Americana. Presidente is also a little closer to town, but both require a taxi.

Not necesarily. My wife and I walked into town several times during the week we stayed at the Americana. It's only about a 15 minute walk. I'm not familiar with the Presidente though.

Then you two must be incredibly fast walkers! Fiesta Americana is at least 8 to 10 miles south of town. I'll clock the exact distance today and let you know.

I WISH I was diving today! A friend of mine is on the island, and dove with another shop his first day because I didn't have space. Ater his very first dive, suffered a very serious case of Type II DCS and is going in for his 4th chamber ride today. I'm driving hhim back and forth and keeping his wife occupied while he is in, because she's naturally terrified and worried about him. He was actually hospitalized between treatments for the first two days due to his extreme dehydration and his inability to walk without falling. He's made a 1000% improvement with each treatment and hopefully today will be the last one.

I know now everyone wants to know what happened...he was dehydrated. I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to be very well hydrated before you dive ESPECIALLY if you traveled and flew in the same day (like he did). Flying dehydrates you as well, so it is important to drink even more water and less caffeine if you plan to dive the same day. Dehydration is the leading cause for DCS in recreational divers and is responsible for 80% of the cases here in Cozumel. He did nothing wrong on the dive and his profile was nothing out of the ordinary.

Anyway, everyone please keep my friedn in your prayers for a full recovery and dive safe and HYDRATE, HYDRATE, HYDRATE!

Christi beat me to it. Either the "town" you walked to was really the southern cruise ship area (there is a group of businesses and residences there), or it was some other hotel you stayed at. There's no way you walked into San Miguel from the Fiesta Americana in 15 minutes.

Was this several years ago? The Hotel Cozumel (formerly Brisas) used to be called something with "Fiesta" in the name, IIRC, and it is much closer to town.

Thank God they have you as a freind. Was he a friend from back home? Wish him well. That could be any one of us. Christi, how old was he? Was age a factor at all?
