:confused2 Help!!! I need some guidance from the "experienced" I am planning my first trip to Coz, have contacted Christi so am all set there and have flights (might as well use up USirways mile before they disappear). So... I am now to a hotel. My wife does not dive so I need a place for both "needs". Looking at Intercontinental Presidente or Fiesta Americana. Are there large differences? Thanks!!!! :god:

Both are excellent hotels. I have never stayed at either. However, I have had the chance to talk with divers that have stayed at both and they certainly enjoyed them both.

If your wife does not dive you might also consider a couple of hotels that are closer to town. Hotel Cozumel is less than a mile from downtown and I have stayed there several times. They have a very large pool, excellent service and it's only a $5 cab ride to downtown.

You might also consider a smaller place like the Hacienda San Miguel. My wife and I have stayed there three or four times. It is only a half a block off the water and is at the very north end of the business/shopping district.

Each room has a full kitchenette with stove, refrig and counter. It has a very beautiful courtyard. They deliver serve sweet rolls, coffee and orange juice each morning free to their guests.

Hope this helps.

Presidente is a 5 star resort in Mexico and would have more to offer a non diver, nice beach for sunning or swimming or snorkeling. It also has a spa if she is into that. My friends stay there and wouldn't stay anywhere else. I would rather spend my money diving. It is also closer to town than FA.

Both are nice choices and I have stayed at both. Pres is much more expensive and IMO not that much nicer unless you upgrade to the Coral rooms which are beach side. They are about twice as much as regular room in the hotel, at least when we stayed there 4 years ago. FA is extremely nice for the money. Service is always very good. Both have nice access to piers for boat pick up. Pres is about 1 mile closer to town but no big deal with using taxis. Both are 60 peso rides for two.

Have a great time

Ditto.

Stayed at El Presidente last year. Fantastic! Even the on-grounds dive op is well above standard.

Five star in Mexico = 3 star at best real world. I have stayed at both numerous times. Presidente is much nicer than Fiesta Americana. Presidente is also a little closer to town, but both require a taxi.

>> Five star in Mexico = 3 star at best real world

...is certainly true, but everything smells like flowers and there's diving.

I don't know the Fiesta but I really like that open quality El Presidente has. Even when you walk up the stairs you get the occasional bit of warm salt spray.

Oh Lord, it's time for me to go back!

True enough, but if the pinnacle of luxury accomodation is your top priority, then Cozumel is really not the destination for you, anyway. The last thing a true 5 star hotel wants is a buncha divers tracking in sand and drinking cheap beers in their rooms. ;^)

Cheers,
