Debating about heading down next spring for the first time, and was hoping for an inexpensive place such as the Fiesta or hotel Coz that I've been reading about that isn't AI. Would like to be close to town so that we can try out the restaurants being that it would be the first time either of us get to mexico, I'd hate to hole up a resort the entire time.

Anyway, my concerns are that it sounds like these two hotels can be quite the partying places. Any tips on spots that aren't AI, are affordable like these two hotels, quiet, near town, and have a decent beach? A lot to ask, but the selection is completely overwhelming in Cozumel.

We just got back a few weeks ago and stayed at Fiesta Americana. It was very quite not a party spot at all. It was slow season time maybe that was part of it. As long as you get a room not facing the pool you should be good. Down side was yes quite but not close to town. We were there for 6 nights and every evening we went into town. That was $6 going and $6 coming back in taxi fees. My husband and I want to go back but decided that we are going to stay closer to town since that is were everything is at. We dove with Blue XT and she has some deals with a few of the hotels in town and can package a hotel with a dive package to save you a few $$ plus you are only dealing with one person for diving and hotel. Just an option, which is how we will do it next time.
Anyways my 2c hope it helps

That's kind of the revelation we had this trip as well. While it's nice to be on the all-inclusive resorts when we do the big family trips with all the kiddos, it sure is nice to be right down town when doing an adult only dive trip.

Christi gets good rates at CB. The staff there is friendly, the terrace has hammocks to lounge in, A small but cooling pool, it is quiet no music and dancer-size, and a great little snack shop for breakfast and lunch. Christi will pick up on their pier which is only 20 paces from the Lobby. Ask for first or second floor there is no elevator. 104 is the last room on the first floor nice and quiet and the first room for hot water as the heater is in a room just outside 104.

True. Out of town eateries can be dubious...

We always keep a cooler full of tortillas, dried meats, fruit, water, juices, etc. in the room for late-night fixens...
