Come on everybody.... show us your Cozumel scorpionfish!

Gotta tell you a funny story. We had been diving in Cozumel for a couple of years, done about 30 dives there, and our daughter wanted to see a scorpionfish. We hadn't seen one yet. We were underwater and she signaled the DM the sign for scorpionfish and shrugged her shoulders. He signaled back to follow him.... 30 seconds later he pointed down and there it was! We were so excited and couldn't figure out how he found one so fast. Well, after that we all started seeing them everywhere! Funny how you don't recognize something until someone points it out. LOL We felt so stupid.

So show us your Scorpionfish!!!

The fish I find most coolest, yet see the least since they are SO well concealed lol.....!

I leave the scorpionfish spotting to my buddy-wife, I usually can't see them even after she points them out to me :D

Scorpionfish? I can play.

The most common scorpionfish in Cozumel is the Spotted scorpionfish (Scorpaena plumieri)

Less common and harder to find is the Reef scorpionfish (Scorpaenodes carribaeus), often found hiding in crevaces in the reef.

A very small member of the scorionfish family is the mushroom scorpionfish (Scorpeana inermis) often mistaken for juvenile spotted scorpionfish.

an example of why they are so hard to see sometimes!

there are dozens of them on the shore dive at SCC. In fact, I almost put my hand down on one when trying to shoot video of another one... they were literally a foot apart.

If you watch my "Shore diving at SCC" video, you will see one of them that was stalking me one dive. He literally came hopping across the sand to me, and then followed me as I moved away. I got video of him hopping which was very bizarre!!

and here is one of the tiny reef scorpionfish that we found at the SCC shore dive area. I thought it was a baby spotted until Jim corrected me when I posted it in my trip report.
