My hotel emailed me this letter today with news about a Cozumel Environmental Recovery Fee. Is this true? Those of you who already made Cozumel visits in 2025, can you verify this?

This has been true for many years. It goes up slightly every year or two. I believe last year it was 67.35 peso per night. So a one week stay is 7x79.19 pesos or about $13-14 USD per person per week in a two-person room.
Seems reasonable.

Interesting! I am thinking then that the old fee is already captured in my previous payment to the hotel. I will have to pay the difference upon arrival? I will find out in a few days!

this is not new.
not sure where the post above got the exchange rate but 79 mxn is close to $4usd according to the interwebz. lol.
the amount is not the point. it's just another bs tax imho. but this has been beaten to death online.

How is this environmental recovery fee assessed? Is it added on as taxes and fees when one books accommodation? Or is the fee assessed upon checking in?

My previous visits to the island the hotel management made zero mention of the fee. Now, the manner in which the hotel manager notified me raises a lot of questions.

compare your recent booking to your past bookings if you still have the info. your itinerary should show if there were any additional taxes or fees added to your booking, or if any of those were due at check in and paid directly to the hotel.

This. I've had stays, at the same resort but booked through different third parties, and sometimes the tax is included and other times it's due at the resort.

I looked through my past receipts. The room charges are listed individually by day. However, the taxes and fees are not listed individually. Receipts show just a total dollar amount for taxes and fees. Difficult to determine what individual taxes and fees were assessed.
