Cozumel Doctor?

I have used Dr. Piccilo (located on Calle 6 I think). Although he has a hyperberic chamber, fortunately I've never needed it. But I have seen him twice for ear problems. He chides me that I don't see him soon enough. And I fully expect that he will tell you that you are done diving for the next few weeks. The meds he prescribed cost more than the doctor's visit. His wife (a nurse) is awesome at dealing with insurers should it turn out that you need more than drugs.

We too have used Dr. Piccilo. Several trips back, he was extremely helpful at the end of our 20plus dives when an ear decided to hurt after being out of the water for over 24 hours. Thank goodness for his visit! I don't think I could have flown home later without his help! Now we always travel with Oto Eni ear drops that he prescribed there on the island. Since that trip we have always been able to get it at Chedraui or Mega just by showing the box in the pharmacy to have a new one to bring home between trips. With as fast as the ear problem came on that trip, I'll never be caught without those drops!

LOL, $80 for a visit with a good DR isn't cheap?

I've read that a visit to a doctor in Mexico is usually around $20 US, so compared to that....

Considering you may be being treated by one of the foremost diving doctors on the planet, I agree it's quite reasonable.

BTW the address I posted was from the receipt. When I Googled it the address was different. So was the chamber--the one I saw had cute little fishies and stuff painted all over it. Is there more than on hyperbaric chamber on the island in the same general area?

Contact Dr. Dario Gomez at CMC - he is the DAN preferred Dr. and specialist in diving injuries. 872-9400 - press 1 for English and ask to see him as soon as possible

A visit with him will NOT be $80 - more like $30 - $40 - but I can almost guarantee that your diving for the week is probably not going to happen. I'm not a DR. but everything you mention says "barotrauma" which is a pressure injury to the ear usually from not equalizing soon enough or forcing equalization. It is not dangerous or life threatening - but does need to heal before you continue diving - as well as antibiotic drops to prevent/kill ant infection that is likely to occur. These typically take 2 - 4 weeks to heal.

Dr. Piccolo is also very very good - but I would stick with CMC (Dr. Gomez) or San Miguel Clinic (Dr. Piccolo) - Gomez and Piccolo are the 2 best Diving Dr.s on the planet

Here's the update-

I went to San Miguel Clinic around 9:00am, I saw a doctor about 5 minutes after arriving. He examined my ear and diagnosed me with a perforated ear drum. He gave me a prescription and referred me to the Ear Doctor for an appointment in the afternoon. I was in and out in less than 15 minutes and the fee was only $600 pesos, I returned at 1pm and was immediately seen by the ear doctor, his name is Dr. Galeana, he inserted a scope into my good ear and I watched it on a TV in front of me, he then put it in my bad ear and I could easily see the hole. He proceeded to auction out the fluid and then clean the ear. He was very friendly and efficient, he had excellent English as well. He prescribed two medications. The cost of the visit was $1700 pesos, around $100. Both of these charges were very reasonable and I felt in great hands. Unfortunately my diving is cancelled for the week but ScubaLuis has been great and is willing to take my wife out diving and I can go along for the ride even if he has no other bookings.

Right now I am trying to find an IST pro ear mask, I had one before and would like to pick up another while here so I can at least snorkel a bi. Anyone have any leads on finding one here?
